'Tis the giving season, or so they say, so why not give yourself one of the many 'pay what you want' indie game bundles on sale this weekend? You'll have more lovely games than you could ever hope to play. You could always buy them as gifts for other people, I suppose. Of course, there are heaps, buckets and piles of individual games on sale at digital distributors too. Here's our selection of this weekend's PC deals:

Amazon

Nuclear Dawn

Blizzard

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

Direct2Drive

Friday:

Need for Speed: The Run

GamersGate

Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition

Get Games

Thief: Deadly Shadows

Good Old Games

Almost every game at GOG is on sale right now. The full list is this-a-way, but here are a few highlights:

Freespace 2

Humble Indie Bundle

Pay what you want for a bundle with Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony, BIT.TRIP RUNNER, Super Meat Boy, Shank, and NightSky. Pay more than the average to get Gratuitous Space Battles and Cave Story+ too.

Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony

IndieGala

Pay what you want for a bundle with Hacker Evolution: Duality, inMomentum, Saira, Your Doodles Are Bugged! and Zombie Shooter 2. Pay more than the average price to receive Hacker Evolution: Untold and Zombie Shooter too. All games are redeemable on Steam.

Hacker Evolution: Duality

Impulse

Might & Magic Heroes VI

Little Big Bunch

Pay what you want for a bundle with Explodemon, Frozen Synapse, New Star Soccer 5, Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee, Serious Sam: Double D.

Serious Sam: Double D

Matrix Games

Specialist strategy publisher Matrix is offering around a third off most of its games. I would select a few highlights if I had the slightest clue about hardcore, esoteric strategy titles.

Gary Grigsby's War in the East

Origin

The Saboteur

Steam

As well as being discounted, Nuclear Dawn is free to play this weekend, so you can try before you buy. However, it's actually cheaper to buy on Amazon, and is a Steamworks game so you'll activate it on Steam anyway. Until Saturday, 10am Pacific:

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon

Kinda funny that Gary Grigsby's War in the East, after a 33% discount, is down to... $53.99. It's usually $79.99. And if you want a disc that's $10 more.

I understand why the game is so expensive - it's a super hardcore niche game of limited appeal whose price has to be higher to cover the fact that they won't sell nearly as many copies, and the target market presumably appreciates and understands it.

But I have to wonder what effect Steam sales have on a game like this. As in, does the fact that a digital distributor sells games for dirt cheap in sales have any effect whatsoever on the target audience for this game's willingness to pay (I would imagine not).

Probably not but I don't know why they don't try. The guy that created Avadon: The Black Fortress and a bunch of other RPGs finally started putting his games on steam (http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com) and he made his games cheaper than usual and it seems to be doing ok. But for whatever fucking reason, he refuses to lower the price on his site. I just don't get it. I feel like a lot of genres on the PC are niche genres because the people that make these games are so fucking awful with the business parts of gaming.

I doubt it. The audience is there, they're going to pay the asking price, and Matrix is clearly uninterested in courting the curious.

However! I strongly recommend Field of Glory to anyone who is interested in an approachable tactical-level wargame. Even with the discount it's still pricey ($27), but it's really easy to get into and so much fun.

In the Amazon Daily Deals section, I'm pretty sure Alice meant "Might & Magic HEROES VI Deluxe" - The only place to find the actual Might & Magic VI now is on GOG.com :)

DNF for $10... I shouldn't need convincing at that price, right?

Buy it next year when it's $5 and it includes all the DLC and there are literally no other games available for you to play and you're desperate to play anything.

Sounds good. When I get that desperate I usually just replay all the Half-Life titles. Always a safe bet.

I'm thinking of buying it just to check out that DLC, what's the verdict on that?

I enjoyed it and thought it was better than the main game but if you thought the main game sucked then you're not going to like this either. The patch that allows you to carry 4 weapons at once sure makes it more fun to play though. I can't understand why they didn't allow that in the first place.

Is Earth Defense Force worth it at that price?
I've never played the game before, but I've heard quite a few people saying it's a blast with friends and it definitely sounded fun.

I care so little for something like that in this game. The only time I play with people other than my friends is when I just can't get around it, like in BFBC2 or TF2 (usually still with friends, but playing online to fill out the teams).

Taking that into account, if I could get friends to buy in would it be worth it?

I love Matrix Games. They're one of the reasons that hard-core pc strategy games still exist. I own several of the games they've published. Most of the games really aren't for the weak of heart though. But if you yearn for the days of Panzer General, this is where you want to go.
