Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance looked quite different when it was shown off at the Spike TV Video Game Awards over the weekend. It has a new title and a new developer--but what else has changed? Apparently, almost everything.
When it was originally titled Metal Gear Solid Rising, the game was supposed to take place before Metal Gear Solid 4. Now, it appears to take place "several years after MGS4," and is no longer "part of the Metal Gear Solid series."
A new Japanese podcast reveals that "the staff no longer knew what the core of the game should be," with the team having worked solely on a game where you can chop up anything. That, apparently, was "insufficient," according to a report by Andriasang.
Rising was quietly canceled, hence the mystery surrounding the game. Platinum Games had learned about the game's cancellation during a studio visit and decided to take over. While Platinum had originally intended to use the game's original story, the team wanted to remake it once working on the game. Departing from the original script, Revengeance is now considered "a new Metal Gear," one separate from the Solid series.
While Platinum's penchant for over-the-top action is evident in the Spike TV trailer, it appears that revered director Hideki Kamiya is not at the helm of this collaboration. Our own Garnett Lee will be meeting with Konami later today to discuss further details of this newly revived Metal Gear.
