The free ride ends next year. Final Fantasy XIV has seen more than its share of problems; the beleaguered MMORPG from Square Enix had its subscription plans suspended as the game received tweaks to make it more playable. With a new roadmap to version 2.0 in place, the company is finally ready to reinstate subscriptions. Subscription service will begin January 6th. However, any current players that don't opt-in for the change won't be automatically charged. Instead, your service will simply end on January 5th. "As a token of our appreciation to our valued customers, we will be offering a special discounted rate until the release of FINAL FANTASY XIV Version 2.0," Square Enix notes on its new subscription page. Version 2.0 isn't expected to be ready until 2013, meaning the discounted rates will apply for about a year. Whereas the cost of a 30 day membership with one character used to cost $12.99, it will now cost $9.99. There are additional discounts for players that buy longer subscriptions. For example, a 180 day membership will cost $7.99 a month.

Roadmap to Final Fantasy XIV 2.0

"We are prepared to advance to the next stage of Final Fantasy XIV’s life, confident that we can provide a service worthy of the Final Fantasy name─a service that includes both content-rich updates and the renovation of existing features─and take full responsibility for all that entails," Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada said when announcing Final Fantasy XIV 2.0.
