The Spike TV Video Game Awards may be short on actual award-giving, but it will certainly have a lot of new game announcements. Add one more to the list: Epic Games' North Carolina studio, best known for its work on the Gears of War trilogy, will be revealing a new game this Saturday.

Cliff Bleszinski describes the new project as "entirely new and fresh," which should be a refreshing change after six years on the Gears franchise.

Bleszinski was supposed to reveal a new IP during Games Developer Conference earlier this year. However, that never came to fruition--likely due to the lengthy delay Gears of War 3 received. It's likely that this VGA announcement is the same one meant for GDC.

Make sure stay tuned to all our coverage of the Video Game Awards.

I don't want Samaritan. Its gameplay looked old and dated when it was exhibited as a GDC demo. I want something that focuses on a real-time first-person action and/or combat mechanic. Not dudebro or Dom's wife, or sterile medieval fantasy touchscreen thing, or Orson Scott Card nerdfest.

I don't really see how a non-interactive demo that was built to show off effects and stuff had dated gameplay, but k.

I'd be fine with a Samaritan game, and I think most people would be. For all you could know, Samaritan will be first-person.

I really hope Samaritan is third or you can do a Skyrim and toggle, more game should allow a 3rd to fp its the best.

If translated into gameplay, Samaritan would've been a Devil May Cry style third-person beat-em-up with guns. A quick thought dump from re-watching the Samaritan demo video:

            "Press X to blowtorch chain"...
            "Press X to light cigarette"...
rooftop jump, 3rd-person combat section... cutscene...
            "Press X to transform"...
            3rd-person beat-em-up...
            3rd-person shooter...
            Zany boss battle...

Maybe Cliff Bleszinski loved Bayonetta so much, he started to make his own game in that genre? Now I really liked Bayonetta, but the reason why wasn't simply that it was a third-person beat-em-up (in fact, I've almost never played those kinds of games; I really didn't like the first 6 minutes of God of War 3 combat gameplay). There were all the other things tying in, like the simple and logical combo system, the dodge mechanic, the visual feedback from combat, the zany cutscenes and non-sequitur hilarious moments, the shout-outs and cultural references, and the complete lack of "dudebro" elements.

When I first saw Samaritan, I thought, "Gritty city with neon lights everywhere to show off HDR; wasn't I here in the Unreal Tournament 3 demo?... Angry guy with beard and a blowtorch; at least he doesn't have gigantic armor, but the Unreal Warfare character style is still visible... Space cops, greeeeat, haven't seen that before... Well, I guess I'm out of the running for this game, and YES, they will make it into a game."

I think you're extrapolating too far. It was just an extended cinematic to show of the degree of detail and shader complexity Epic hoped to achieve on whatever the next XBox and Playstation were.

Guess what, you're probably going to get it.

What's the last Epic tech demo that didn't use assets from their next title?

            December 5, 2011 3:34 PM

None of them; they've been using assets from Unreal Warfare in every one of their games since UT2003.

I want Epic to challenge themselves to start a project that is so far away from the Unreal Warfare art style. With their announced approach of 4 smaller games, one of their projects could fit into that. That same project could be something adjacent to what they're announcing at the VGAs. Hell, they could remake Epic Pinball; that would be awesome (but might involve some sort of legal wrangling with Digital Extremes, since that was developed by James Schmalz).

Copy my initial reaction to "more Bioshock" announced in August 2010, and paste here.

It's either more Gears, Shadow Complex, Infinity Blade, or Samaritan, or is something that isn't a first-person shooter or anything with an interesting first-person mechanic. Preliminary reaction: indignant.
