Defense Grid: The Awakening is getting its first story expansion next week, December 7. Titled "Defense Grid: You Monster," the downloadable content will feature GLaDOS from the Portal series. It will cost $4.99 on Steam or 400 MSP on Xbox 360, and requires the original game to play.

The expansion consists of eight new levels and 35 challenge missions, facing off against both aliens and GLaDOS' tests. Hidden Path claims it packs new achievements and a whopping 15 hours of playtime. Plus, the studio released the free Community Challenge update today, with improved UI, more than 30 new challenge missions, and five new game modes.

Defense Grid has intersected with the world of Portal before, as it was one of the first indie games to catch attention as part of Valve's Potato Sack ARG. This eventually led to intrepid fans unlocking Portal 2 a few hours early.

Interesting, I love DG, so I'll get this (during the inevitably xmas sale), but I can't see how integrating with Portal characters will add anything.

What you mean add anything? It will add 8 new levels, portal characters or not, that righ there is worth 5 bucks. Plus it kind of ties in too since from the beginning you're working under the guidence of computer anyway.

Defense Grid is one of my favorite Tower Defense games. I think these guys perfected TD genre and more devs should look to them to see how to do a TD game right. Own it on Live and PC so I'll probably buy it twice when it comes out. They really deserve it.

GLaDOS and the entire Portal franchise is such a great little treat that could be added into all sorts of manner of indie games without overdosing on it, making cross-promotion great. Love that Valve continues to support the indies with this type of add-on.

Stuff like this only adds more awesome to an already awesome game. And the GlaDOS levels that were added as part of the prelude to Portal 2 were hilarious. Another instant purchase.

Being successful isn't that difficult, being high on the leaderboards requires a knack though.

Think firing coverage, update towers that maximize that coverage and slow the enemy down with temporals.

I had so much trouble with the final level my first time playing. On a replay a couple months ago I breezed right through it, was almost too easy.

Once you have a good mental picture of what each tower is capable of it really does get soooo much easier.

I had a phase of doing minimalist builds, can do some maps (gold, no cores lost) using just 5 towers.
