Before Bungie blew up with the Halo franchise, it worked on a sci-fi first person trilogy called Marathon. As a surprise gift for the holiday season, all three games are being released for free alongside an open-source version of the Marathon 2 engine, Aleph One.

Included in the release is Marathon 2, Marathony Infinity, and a "fan remake" of the original Marathon. A few simple clicks will let you download a version for PC, Mac, and even Linux, too.

Aleph One updates Bungie's original games with OpenGL shader support, internet co-op and multiplayer, "modern mouse-look" and support for game pads.

Each of the games have been updated with high-resolution graphics. However, the original game gets the most significant overhaul. Marathon's HUD receives a modern HUD facelift and "extensive changes to the scenario to create the most authentic Marathon experience since 1994."

So, what are you waiting for? To download Aleph One, click here.

Rad. The original Marathon is the first game that I ever played networked, the first game that I ever modded (eventually worked on "Trojan"), and is ultimately what got me into games as a career. Crazy stuff. Definitely going to load these up! Thanks for posting. :D

They actually released this for free almost 7 years ago:

      http://www.shacknews.com/article/35191/marathon-for-free
      http://www.shacknews.com/file/6039/aleph-one (Aleph One engine only)

Back then, it was a bit wonky, like it was a very close port from the original Mac binaries, and the mousecode was slow and hard to adjust the sensitivity. Did they improve it over the years?

Back in 2005 they GPL'd Aleph One, and released the game assets for free download. How is today's news different?

Yep, they've just been working on the project since then. The relevant folks think that the games are now in good enough shape to label them "version 1.0".

They've added better networking, a co-op mode, likely better graphics support for modern drivers, etc.

The entire reason for this news article is because the engine has only just now reached version 1.0. Took a hell of a long time. And HELL YES, it has been vastly improved.

Was recently playing the original Marathon. Gosh games were so much more difficult back then. Was having vastly more fun playing it than any Cod4 or BF3 single player game could ever be.

Uhh, they've been free for a while. But hey! Good you're bringing it people's attention because those games fucking ruled.

This has been free for a bit. Not sure how much different the update has made but can't wait to see it when I get home!
