Shack PSA: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive closed beta has begun

The closed beta for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has begun, offering select PC players a chance to try a small piece of the upcoming multiplayer-focused title.

As promised, the time has come. If you were lucky enough to receive an invite, the PC closed beta for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has begun. Originally scheduled to start in October, Valve pushed the beta's release to late November due to feedback from top Counter-Strike players.

The beta population will increase over time, according to Valve, as the company aims to hit the game's targeted "early 2012" release. But in typical Valve fashion, the developer said last month that there is "no mandate from anybody of when we have to ship this." Valve says CS:GO will ship when it's ready.

The announcement was made in a simple, yet effective, Twitter message to fans from the game's official account: "Go. GO. GO." As previously reported, the beta itself is a very small portion of the final game. Sixteen maps are promised at launch, including eight classic maps and eight "Gun Game" maps.

Last month, Valve's Chet Faliszek said the beta will end "When the community tells us. It ends when it's ready."

I wonder how it plays. I haven't played CS/CS:S in over 5 years. But I played enough, all the sound effects, death animations (CS) and maps are seared in my brain.

I prefer CS's gameplay to that of today's CoD and the like games, but I really can't get passed the silly hit detection of the bullets. I've been told it's NOT the hit detection, but the "recoil" of the weapon you're using. IDK about you, but I've fired an assortment of different rifles in my life including assault rifles and the recoil will not give you a headshot if you're aiming at the ground and/or shooting to the left/right of your target.

I'd really like to see that fixed (happens ALL the time [for me] in CSS so I had to stop playing it) for CS:GO for I am looking for a new competitive FPS... even though I can't get enough of the L4D series!

Counter-Strike's various camera views (post death) and the map are still some of the best views I've had with multiplayer. CoD upped the game with its killcam and I wished that CS implemented it.

I also hope that CS gets a true sequel. What really set CS apart was the money system and no other game has something like it.

That's all i could think when watching this. Exact same game. New textures. $60 please.

          Not.

Games are evolving. I hate to see CS turn into the next COD - endless upgrades with no actual innovation, just re-doing the exact same formula over and over.

It's not going to be $60 as it's an Arcade title, maximum you're looking at is about $15-20
