Final Fantasy XIII-2 shows 'enhanced' combat

A new Final Fantasy XIII-2 trailer highlights the combat system, which is staying largely true to the groundwork laid by its predecessor.

Final Fantasy XIII had its share of complaints, but the more fast and frenetic combat system usually wasn't one of them. Now Final Fantasy XIII-2 is aiming to rectify complaints from the first game, but it's still making a tweak or two to the combat system.

The trailer highlights the return of the Paradigm Shift system and the addition of quick-time events during combat. Check it out below.

Combat system was definitely one of mine. The only change I see here are QTEs, other than that its the same old boring macro management.

The system is basically a stripped down action RPG. They could have had an awesome system if it you could control where characters move and which attacks they use, similar to something like star ocean, but with their paradigm shifting.

FFXIII's combat was great. It's not an action RPG at all, it's more like you're the coach deciding the tactics while the AI handles the details. It works very well once the game actually starts getting challenging.

I know it's not an action RPG - it's a stripped down one. It has everything it needs to be one, but with movement around the battlefield stripped out. All of that is done for you, in fact so much is done for me that I feel I'm not playing a game at all.

I platinumed the game and even spending 100+ hours playing it I still can't enjoy the battle system. So I'm also passing on this game, and hoping they haven't made the same mistakes with Versus.

I respect your opinion and am not trying to say you're wrong, but want to point out that it is just that: an opinion. To some, the battle had the opposite effect you described: they removed some of the tedium of the smaller mechanics. Less focus on mechanics and more focus on the higher level outcome of the fight. Personally, I enjoyed the system.

I really enjoyed the combat system, and I am looking forward to seeing what XIII-2 brings to the table. Not liking those QTE at first glance but maybe they are something akin to overdrives or something, we shall see.

I hate Quick Time Events. I hope I can turn them off.

I really want to try XIII, but man, the rumors of "thirty hour tutorial."

Yea, I finally got through the last of the tutorial and my time stamp is 36 hours. :P It's been a pick it up, put it down for months, then pick it up again for a week, then put it down again for months.

I hate how you can only control one character. That's such bollocks.

While it may not be the best game in the series, i thought the combat in 10 was the best by far. The sphere grid + turn based swap out combat == totally awesome battles. Esp when you had people better at killing certain types of mobs (wakka for air, tidus for small light guys, auron for heavy armored dudes, one dedicated summoner) you used everyone and there was some challenge to your 39204th battle instead of just spamming 'attack'.

Please to be going back to that. People who want non turn based combat can go play kingdom hearts or something else square made. Bring FF back to its damn roots for 15.
