Here it is, the SystemShock2 demo for you to mess around with all weekend. Grab it from the guys at GameCenter if you're feeling saucy:

In the demo, you will start with a smattering of weapon skills, tech skills, and cybernetics. You can grow your character any way that you see fit. The full version allows you to build your character in the 3D character generation system. You can choose from three different branches of military service.

  • Holy shit, this is a great game. I\'d heard about System Shock and how it was supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, heck--I even bought it. But I\'ve never played it--too outdated right now. Well, after playing the demo for SS2, I will be loading up the original immediately--so that when I buy ss2 the minute it hits the shelves, I\'ll have some background in the story. This demo rocks--even though it took me a helluva long time on my 56k AOL account [stop laughing :( ] it was more than worth the download. I\'ll be saving up the pennies and dimes to buy this game immediately after its release. Wow.

  • About the monsters spawning: That only happens when you set off an alarm. Makes sense plot-wise. Shodan senses the alarm, knows what section you are in, and just starts teleporting guys in from all over the ship (the rest of the game theoretically, but not really). Also, it makes you alot more cautious of setting of alarms. If you knew only 3 guys would show up everytime you set one off, you\'d just burn through the levels, and smack out the 3 guys each time. This way, you go \"OH SHIT!!\" and have to run for the security comp to turn off the alarms (or do it beforehand).

Tram car thing was kind of odd. Wasn\'t expecting such a direct rip from HL, but i understand what they are trying to say -- SS2 is going to own in the same way HL did, so bohica.

    - mouse control is seriously very sluggish.. same problem Shogo had when it came out.
    - flickering lights on truck in starting area sucked.
    - monsters do randomly spawn from nowhere.. shouldn\'t that be incorporated into the story if the user is going to notice it?
    - nice hacking system, very unique..
    - the ambient sound is a bit too much in the area where you upgrade stats/skills/etc.
    - weapons so far are good, but that psi pull in the training area is mislabeled (from kinetic propulsion) and doesn\'t work.
    - starting inside a train car: a bit similar to another highly interactive sci-fi game that won top honors recently?

So far, looks good. I didn\'t think I\'d play through it, but came back and finished it. Took me only 15 minutes the second time around.

  • This demo is abso-friggin-lutely
worth the download. I loved the
first one (I think I\'m going to pull
that out and run through it before
Aug. 12th) and this just continues
the series. An interface you don\'t
have to fight w/, expected co-op
multi (drool!), and story to make
it the first true competitor to half
life, if not better. We\'ll see about
the last, but just have *something*
that brings up that argument makes
    me joyous.
Heh, maybe its the best combination
    of western kung-fu and eastern
    kung-fu, follow me here. Japanese
    console RPGs always take you
along a guided path, fleshing out
    characters that (thoeretically) make
you care about them and the
story. US RPGs go the route of
    dropping you somewhere and
letting you play with the equivalent
of a big lego set, make you own
    afventure. This looks like fighting
shodan be great story, but having
    3 routes of doing it...
I know *someone* will hunt me
down for this, but I look forward
to this game more than Quake 3
    after playing both the demos.
SS2 may not have the graphics,
but the only other game to make
    me jump (and subsequently
scream like a girl) was the facehugger
in AvP. Those mutants made me
    jump. They\'re wacked little buggers.

    Damn I can\'t wait.

  • Just downloaded and played the demo. Took a fair while to get it with my 56K modem and the demo itself is pretty short. *sigh* gone are the days when you could get a whole episode of Quake at about 7megs :)
The game seems quite interesting with a lot of abilities to develop and tantalising glimpses of what\'s to come - but the demo itself just introduces you to the interface, really.
btw #6 I don\'t agree that it compares with half-life graphically
I\'m a fps or rts man meself so i dunno whether i\'d buy it. It would have been nice to see more ...

  • Okay, I found the solution to the mpeg problem myself after rooting around the Windows registry.
Yes.. the System Shock 2 demo IS the problem with not being able to play mpeg files through your media player...
the good news is that it isn\'t a permanent problem. If you uninstall the System Shock 2 demo all will return to normal.
If you want to keep the demo on you system and still watch mpegs in the meantime, you just need to move the LGVID.AX file (found in the System Shock 2 Demo directory) to somewhere else on your hard drive while accessing mpeg files through Windows Media player... then move it back when you\'re ready to play the demo again.
Heh.. you just gotta love these little things that pop up everytime you install a new piece of software. :)

Okay, back to my porn mpegs. Take care.
