SOE: DC Universe daily revenue up '700 percent' since going free-to-play

Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley has claimed that, since switching to a free-to-play business mode, daily revenue for the MMO DC Universe Online has increased by 700 percent.

Since going free-to-play, the Sony Online Entertainment team responsible for DC Universe Online cannot stop beaming with pride. Soon after going free-to-play on November 1, SOE announced its the super-powered MMO gained 120K users and, according to new data, the game's post-F2P growth continues.

SOE president John Smedley unleashed a barrage of tweets, celebrating some impressive details regarding DC Universe Online's growth. Smedley states that since going free-to-play, DCUO has seen a steady player base growth of 6% per day and "more than 85% of daily log-ins are returning players."

Financially, DCUO has seen a "700% increase in daily revenue," which works out to 47% on PC and %3% on PlayStation 3. A list of Smedley's recent tweets released by SOE note that the most popular marketplace items include "Vanguard of the Heavens character skin and Additional Character Slots," the latter of which makes some sense considering free-to-play users only have access to two character slots in the game.

DC Universe Online expansion continues with a new content back coming "later this year," which adds electricity-based powers.

      Yes, but what does that translate into actual revenue and profit? A 700% increase of $1 is still only $7. Doesn't mean it's going to pay the rent. Doesn't mean the game is suddenly profitable.

        In the article from earlier this month, they describe gaining 120,000 total users and a 300% increase in concurrent users online. That gives a fuzzy idea of total players before the switch. If there were even 25,000 active subscriptions, you're looking at an increase to monthly revenue of over 2 million.

        I think whats more important, however, is that this 300% increase in concurrent users amounts to a 700% increase in revenue. On average, the player is spending more than twice what they would be on a subscription service.

      I was really digging this game... and then Skyrim came out.

      I could see springing for the Green Lantern DLC when I get back into after I am done with Skyrim.

      Signed up for free account, played free account, deleted game. Terrible game MMO, the combat is retarded, it had a LOT of potential maybe on ps3 it is way better but on the pc it was horrible.
