Painkiller sequel considered as DreamCatcher relaunched

DreamCatcher, which was acquired by Nordic Games earlier this year, will be relaunched in an attempt to resell its back-catalog and develop sequels to its "bestselling brands and licenses," such as Painkiller.

The Painkiller franchise will be revived as long-defunct publisher DreamCatcher is being revived. The company, which was acquired by Nordic Games earlier this year, will be relaunched in an attempt to resell its back-catalog and develop sequels to its "bestselling brands and licenses." Specifically noted are Painkiller, a first person shooter series originally developed by People Can Fly, and Safecracker, a puzzle series.

Nordic Games, the parent company of the relaunched DreamCatcher label, has already successfully relaunched JoWood and The Adventure Company, and hopes to find repeat success. "Our approach is to assess the performance of DreamCatcher’s portfolio through back-catalog sales, and as a consequence develop sequels to its bestselling brands and licenses, just as we did with our other two publishing labels," CEO Lars Wingefors told Gamasutra.

It's unclear who would develop a new Painkiller game. Developer People Can Fly last collaborated with Epic Games on Bulletstorm.

why is Nordic Games relaunching these companies, I mean its great from a job stand point. But in the case of JoWood.....that ArcaniA expansion was just awful. (of course, ArcaniA Gothic 4 wasn't great either)

I think Nordic Games buys and re-shapes companies, to turn them into something profitable and better functioning - like buying an old house and fixing it up then reselling it. Like what Cerberus Capital Management does for businesses like Boeing. They're in the business of turning bad businesses into good businesses. JoWood should be a different creature after they've gone to work on them.

As long as any more sequels aren't as bad as Resurrection. Overdose was okay, Redemption was okay for the price, but Resurrection was pretty damn horrible. I wish they'd hire the guys who made Hard Reset as that's the best Painkiller like game since Painkiller imo.

You forgot to note that the good Painkiller devs broke off to form Wild Flying Hog, who released Hard Reset this year.

The story was retarded but the gameplay was great and the environments were fantastic looking. It gave me dreams of an open world fps/rpg with that engine in the same world.

It was good but you can tell they did their best to keep costs down so they could accrue some capital. For the price it was worth it but I know if these guys had a much bigger budget we could have something spectacular.

I would love to see them involved in making a new Painkiller if they were going to make a new one.
