MechWarrior Online to use CryEngine 3

Piranha Games' upcoming MechWarrior Online will use CryEngine 3.

Piranha Games' upcoming MechWarrior Online may be a free-to-play game, but it promises not to look cheap. The company has licensed the highly-regarded CryEngine 3 to power the online game, and is one of "over 20" F2P games currently in development using Crytek's engine.

"It is definitely the best choice for us," Piranha Games president Russ Bullock said in a press release. "Both the character animation pipeline with the procedurally and physics based animations and the destruction system fit our goals perfectly."

"2012 will see a new segment in the games industry – as free-to-play games will step up to offer true AAA quality to gamers," Crytek's Carl Jones added. "Both Piranha and Crytek believe in the potential of this market and we look forward to helping them achieve their vision for an amazing game experience."

While MechWarrior Online may be free-to-play, the developer has promised that it is not "pay-2-win." Players will be able to purchase new gear, but that won't necessarily give them the upperhand in combat.

Hmm. That would make this easily the most graphically advanced MMO, right?

Does it have environmental destruction like Frostbite in BF3? It seems like a modern version of a Battletech game should have that at a minimum.

It would make sense to me because they are focusing on urban combat from what I've read.

That would be cool. But I wonder if they'd have to kind of neuter it because, really, if you have these multi-ton mechs hurling ordinance at everything, any city would be completely flattened and there'd never be any terrain other than "flattened buildings + rubble" which might not make for good gameplay.

I'd imagine the destruction to be very limited as I don't remember any significant destruction in Crysis 2. You could destroy windows and perimeter walls, IIRC.

That was decision based. Cryengine has always had desctruction of anything you wanted and deformable terrain. You can use grenades to blow chunks out of the ground then actually run into the holes.

Why hasn't MercFox1 bust a nut in this thread yet? Think he had an aneurysm?

So, Living Legends was a Crysis mod correct? Is there any relationship between that mod and Piranha or is that purely coincidental?

No purely coincidental. Originally this MechWarrior was being built with the Unreal 3 engine. When they restructured to the online version they switched. This was the first that they mention this switch sense the first rumbling a few years ago.

Its getting a little tedious to see developers having to keep reminding some of these thickheaded idiots that F2P is a completely viable method of funding a game and doesn't mean that the game will be cheap looking or playing.

Oh god this is great news. Just hope the game itself doesn't stink.
