Torchlight 2 delayed to next year

Torchlight 2 has been moved out of this calendar year, due to more time needed to polish the game and run a beta test.

Torchlight 2 has been pushed out of this calendar year, according to Runic Games co-founder Travis Baldree. Citing the need for extra polish time and the desire to run a beta before launch, Baldree says the extra time will "ensure that the quality level is consistent all the way to the end."

In the meantime, Baldree suggests playing a few other games like Skyrim and Battlefield 3. "Those are awesome games," he said. "When Torchlight 2 goes live, we want it to be awesome too - all the way through."

"The first Torchlight was released in record time, but it had plenty of issues that a little more development could have resolved," Baldree said in a statement on the official site. "We didn't have the resources at the time to give Torchlight that treatment. Right at this moment though, we do have those resources for the sequel, and we feel strongly that we should apply them to make this the best game we can make and hopefully one that you'll enjoy and continue to want to play in the future. We've probably had 18 months of full development time on it so far - not excessively long yet, as far as that goes. The amount of time we need to take it the rest of the way is relatively small."

As an added benefit, whenever Torchlight 2 does launch, it will be safe from getting overshadowed by the packed release calendar. Plus, it will hit at 20 bucks, which should be a nice sigh of relief for your wallet.

I'm bummed, but the game will be worth waiting for. Four characters, LAN support, and only 20 bucks? Whenever, wherever, Torchlight! (Well, at my computer in my office. But still.)

This is a smart move actually. No need to release during the holiday rush of AAA releases and get lost in the noise. Release in Q1 and get more traction, especially from the media.

They need to release before d3 unless the game is a mess right now.

This is both good and bad, in that I want it soon but there are also TOO MANY GAMES right now and I probably wouldn't get to it til later anyway. So I guess mostly good actually.

They just butt raped themselves...unless they plan releasing it several months after diablo3. And if that's the case, it'll be be an even longer wait.

Whenever TL2 comes out is probably when Diablo 3 will NOT come out.

They better get this thing out before Diablo III hits. The first one was the right game, right time, and a low price. If they wait too long though they are going to miss their window of opportunity.

I would rather buy Torchlight at $20 than Diablo III at $60.

Many of us want to buy both. But the closer we get to D3, the easier it is to get tunnel vision.

I think the lower price tag is going to make this sell well regardless of when it comes out. $20 is less than a night at the movies with your girlfriend!

For those interested, Flux from DIII.net came to our office and played the game last week. He wrote a great article with his impressions here:
