DICE has taken a good look at the glaring imbalance of Battlefield 3's dazzling tactical flashlight, and decided to tone down the power of its blinding effect. The infrared scope and anti-air APCs are under investigation too. Core gameplay designer Alan Kertz unveiled the change on Twitter, with 'before' and 'after' images. There's no word when the change will actually go live, though, with Kertz noting, "I don't know when an update will be done." "It's mostly a range reduction," he explained to the Don't Revive Me Bro podcast (via PC Gamer). "If you get light in your face, it's still going to blind the hell out of you. At 25 metres, it's not that big of a deal." Kertz also revealed that DICE is "looking into" the infrared scope. Mobile anti-air vehicles might be tweaked too, both in how well they fare against air and how "ineffective" they are at anti-infantry. "There is definitely an issue with being hit by mobile air knocking you out of control. I don't feel like the damage that the mobile air does is such an issue as much as how badly it can knock you around while you're flying." Do give the podcast a listen for more thoughts on balance from Kertz.

Absolutely rapes helicopters, but that's what it's for and there's only three maps with 1 per side in the whole game. Can be avoided when you know where it is on the map.

You have to be a complete buffoon to get shot down by the attacker's mobile AA on Damavand or Firestorm.

Mobile AA is honestly not that bad. Good enough pilots can avoid them. I honestly think that they don't need to be touched much like most of the game.

The range is a bit excessive for certain maps. Caspian mostly due to its smaller size. The AA can pretty much cover every single flag from their base.

even though i only play the game with IR scope, i really hope they fix it. the only reason i use it because other people can use it too. it makes the game 100x easier. im a monster with it. it needs to go away so i can see battlefield how it was meant to be seen. basiclly when i play it looks like some weird futuristic shooter all the time.

The problem is it works way too well in daylight. Leave it as is for nighttime/indoors stuff if you want, but I shouldn't be able to pick out a dude in the desert at high noon.

            I concur.

I mean I use it...and if they leave it I'll continue to use it because there's no good reason not to do given the huge disadvantage you're at without it (if others are using it)...but I'd prefer to see them tone it down. The only real benefit of it gameplay-wise is that it does make snipers a little more vulnerable (though the scope glare seems to do that well enough).

Am I the only one who doesn't use them? I prefer to keep switching weapons, leveling everything I have up. I've gotten the Service Star on 12 different guns, and I usually dump it for something else right away. While the IR scope is nice, I like being able to put anything I want on any weapon, so sticking with one is not going to happen until I've finished them all.

I disagree. THe other night there was a good pilot and two guys on guns and the other spots were engineers repairing mid air. The pilot was very good and it was just a rape train that flew everywhere and never got shot down.

          November 11, 2011 9:38 PM

correct, it's all about the pilot. If the pilot puts the gun towards the enemy then its raping time. Too many pilots go head on towards the base and you can shoot shit but the trees.

            It was actually.

I played the beta and it was infuriating that a flashlight 400m away could totally blind me while outdoors. A laser sights aimed to the eyes wasn't even as bright.

It really isn't that big of a deal. Trust me, I've played 36+ hours of the game, it's not something to be concerned with. The number of people using it and the number of times it's made a noticeable impact on the outcome of a fight is ridiculously small. If that is your only reason, then yes I say it is a dumb one.

                  Nice personal attack btw.

Then you've been seeing the AA tank wasted. A properly placed AA tank can completely lock down the skies with impunity. And destroy infantry. And sneak up and kill MBTs.

If the AA tank driver on Noshahr Canals DOESN'T get the MVP, they're doing it wrong.

      November 11, 2011 3:51 PM

You know, they wouldn't have been so bad if they actually had a downside to them. Like a flashlight gives away your position as it does in real life, not just when you're blinded by it (like a laser). The laser pointer gives away someones position better then the tactical light. If you could actually see the cone from the flashlight that would balance it more then just nerfing it ever would and I don't mean just toning it down.

It's sad that they can't think of other ways to balance things besides linear states.

Stingers need a buff. Now that a lot of pilots have flares you end up wasting so many shots. Heck, give the engineer class a perk that gives his missiles a greater (but still not 100%) chance of ignoring flares.
