Final Fantasy XIII-2 fits on one DVD. But, if you miss the joys of owning lots and lots of discs, Square Enix has announced a new collector's edition for the upcoming RPG. Available "in limited quantities" at GameStop, Amazon, and Best Buy, the $80 package includes "premium packaging" featuring artwork by none other than Yoshitaka Amano. In addition, the bundle includes a 4-disc official soundtrack, and a collection of concept art bound in an art book. It promises to feature a variety of "never-before-seen illustrations, environments and more."

So many discs

Unfortunately, there's no way to get a "definitive" version of the game, even when buying the collector's edition. There are retailer-specific pre-order bonuses that are separate from this premium bundle. GameStop will offer an alternate costume for Serah, while Amazon will offer an exclusive boss battle. Best Buy will offer a hardcover novella featuring an original story that "ties together the events of Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2." For the collectors, that sounds like the best promo to get. Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be available on PS3 and Xbox 360 on January 31.

What Square/Enix did to this series is unspeakable. To think, how many hours I sunk into FFVII and VIII...I wouldn't spend 10 minutes on this repetitive, stupid game.

Come on now, I'm a huge fan of FFVII (VIII was good but not my favorite) and I'll admit XIII wasn't as good but its not as bad as you're making out. It's still a fun, fairly standard JRPG.

It's just so damned repetitive...here is a long hallway...filled with monsters...oh, look, up on the ledge, a treasure box...ah here comes the "boss" of the hallway...I lift a lever...and onto the next hallway. If that doesn't describe 90% of the game I don't know what to tell you.

VII was the beginning of the downward slide, not the high watermark.

So what was the high mark?

Even people who haven't played VII, or any FF, know VII was the high mark.

                VI
I wouldn't say there's been a far-reaching downward slide at all. Never played 8 but I know many people who love it, 9 was good, 10 was good, 12 was fun, and 13 was good once you got the hang of the on-the-fly switching.

I don't consider VII to be the high mark, the presentation was amazing, at least for the time. But the game was much less awesome after around the first disc. The story started breaking down and things felt rushed, like they were running out of ideas and forced a conclusion. Not to mention the let down of the Crater, really, a final area with only 1 set-boss? I was expecting something a little more epic along the lines of previous FF games which had tons of bosses in the final dungeon.

Yeah, Xulu is right. VII was definitely the high-water mark of this series, with VI (Terra, Locke, etc.) a close second in my mind. With/without amazing cut scene movies.

XIII-2 is supposed to be more open/crono-trigger-ish

Boring, repetitive, no real character development, music is too loud that you can barely hear the character voices, the settings are awful, majority of the game is a tutorial, story is very bland and not that interesting, BUT the game looks beautiful!!! I'm glad that Square-Enix has decided that Visual Effects and music makes a game. Please let Final Fantasy die....

Not having towns is standard in JRPGs now?
