Shack Voodoo4 Feature

The 3dfx NDA has been released and the big news? The T-Buffer technology which will be featured in that Voodoo4 card that people are just now starting to talk so much about. Also known as "Napalm" Marcus was down in California checking out the technology and has written up an article for you guys to read. I just slapped it into the Q3Test article template from earlier but I havent had a chance to change the images yet. Go ahead and read the article and I'll have the accompanying images in there within a couple of hours (It's a big download)

Basically, the T-Buffer boosts eye candy content in games. The first and foremost effect of the T-Buffer is real-time full-scene anti-aliasing. The easiest way to describe aliasing are the "jaggies" or "stair casing" that one can see on the edges of polygons. Usually these are the most apparent at lower resolutions (and/or larger displays). Increasing the resolution reduces the "artifact" somewhat, but aliasing is still noticeable even at high resolutions like 1600x1200.
You can also check out the Voodoomag, VoodooExtreme,   CombatSim, and GameSpot articles.

  • To see AA at work right now, you can fire up the drakan demo with a TNT card and see your FPS drop to about 1 frame/15 seconds. (At least it worked on my roommate\'s computer, and we took screenshots) But what a difference.. wow. It\'s a very cool technology and it WILL be one of the next big thing for cards. (One of them..) 3dfx is not blowing smoke up our asses or pulling the blanket over our eyes. Cards are pushing towards a Toy Story type look and you cant get that look without AA by any means, unless you get INSANE resolutions (like over 4,000 X 3,000?) and most monitors today can barely hit over 2,000 x 1,600 (or whatever that is) much less any 3d cards.

Personally, I\'m most excited about what cards will be like in 5 years. Let 3dfx and Nvidia fight it out until the cows come home.. the biggest winner in all of this is us, the gamers.

  • OK all what about hardware environmental bump maping or whatever its called (the shit that matrox has) is that going to be either on the NV10 or V4? I thought that environmental bump mapping was the shit!! im definately more impressed with the environmantal bump mapping than this t-buffer shit. This t-buffer to me sounds like 3dfx is trying to pull another blanket over gamers eyes......i mean who are they to tell us the importance of t-buffer technology, i mean if it so great why arent any other card makers talking about it. i think to some it up .......3dfx forget the features its all about $$$ now!!

  • just something thats been bothering me here. people saying 3dfx this, is faster than nvidia that, since blah blah. correct me if im wrong. but hasnt independent benchmarking companies shown that overall:
tnt is faster than the voodoo2.
tnt2 is faster than the voodoo3.
and i think even the nvidia128 faster than the voodoo as someone was saying earlier. yes i know that the 3dfx part came out first in all of those cases. but they were in direct competition with them. and dont start spewing quake or quake 2 benchmarks at me either. im talking overall performance. not some mini gl driver game.

  • uh hey dsl boy..
look at computers from the time quake1 was released...
Fastest system p133...and you were cooking!
    and quake 3 computers

i think the v770 ultra is 150/175 or so out of the box
and the voodoo3 3500 IS faster fool NOT prettier but about 1-5fps faster..
and dont start tossing that 32bit rendering sheit in..
it doesnt matter how fucking many colors i see when i\'m playin q2 n q3test..
as long as i can see you.. i can frag you..
and what GAMES are dx7.. uh.. as of now NONE are out there that use dx7 for one reason.. THERE IS NO FUCKING DX7 OUT THERE! (unless your counting win2000 beta)
    and btw...
Quake2 is the almighty benchmarker for my video cards..
if q2 sucks with that card.. then that card isnt bought by me..
