How Modern Warfare 3 dedicated servers work

Sledgehammer Games has published a basic walkthrough of how to create your own dedicated server in Modern Warfare 3.

Modern Warfare 3 is mere hours away now. PC users are getting dedicated server support, but just in case you're new to the whole "dedicated servers" thing, Sledgehammer Games has written up a fairly detailed tutorial. It covers the basics on how to make your server and set your rules.

The Sledgehammer Blog entry covers setting a recipe (match rules) in the Private Match Setup screen, though you can also add criteria with a text editor if you'd like. Once you've selected a match type, the Options screen will let you tweak the particulars. Once you've saved the recipe, you can add it to the Playlist with other recipes to determine rotation, and then set your server live. To simply browse dedicated servers, you'll need to enable it in the Options menu.

It all seems straight-forward enough, and Sledgehammer promises a more advanced tutorial coming soon. Sledgehammer is actually one of three developers that Activision pulled together for Modern Warfare 3's development; the other two being Raven Software and Infinity Ward.

I just read one of the first Modern Warfare 3 reviews @ http://mwarfare3.com . The game sounds like it's going to be great and I can't wait to get my hands on it come midnight! I woner if the servers are going to crash because it seems like everyone in the world is getting this game.

Looks completely unbiased from a respected news source. No wait, its a fan site that is all about the CoD series.

Granted, most reviews are pretty sketchy but this seems even sketchier.

Anyone else thought it was painful to read that review? I hope they are not native english speakers because that was horrendous. They need an editor.

Don't forget that you can't rank up on dedicated servers, pretty weak if you ask me: http://community.callofduty.com/thread/4682

Meaning unlocks are completely controlled by the Server Admin. They can choose to unlock everything or limit class restrictions to whatever they like to fully customize the experience. You do not have to rank up in Public games to have access to weapons in Dedicated Servers, you have complete control over what is unlocked for you in a Unranked Dedicated Server.

        sounds pretty good to me

How is that good? Maybe for clans and competitions. But for pub games you are locked into different experiences depending on what server you join. You might have unlocks, you might not. Hell I doubt many people will be using it because they'll be using p2p to be ranked. I just wish they had ranked dedis via the approved service providers like BF3 or Black Ops.

Well initially everyone will just unlock everything. So basically you get the full game even if you are captain casual. No BS grind, or being raped by the guy who has the best perk and best weapon combos.

And once people realise what the most overpowered combos are, some servers will disable them until they are fixed.

Seems better than the alternative, really.

Yeah. They could've had RPS requirements for ranked dedis and given anyone the ability to have unranked dedicated servers. No lean either. Totally bummed by this.

You cant rank on Dedicated servers? that is pure bs. Who the hell wants to play p2p.
