Weekend Confirmed 85 - Ratchet & Clank: All for One, Uncharted 3, GTA5
by Xav de Matos, Nov 04, 2011 11:00am PDTOnly a few blocks off the beach that inspired the virtual clone in seen in its opening, the Grand Theft Auto V trailer sparked the imagination when the Weekend Confirmed crew sat down to record this week's show. James Stevenson of Insomniac Games and Ariel Angelotti of Q-Games join Jeff and Garnett to speculate about the potential for Rockstar's next entry in the series before moving on to a number of other games, including two from their respective studios. Producer Dave Mabee hops on the mic to add his take on Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One, and then it's on to PixelJunk Sidescroller. Lord of the Rings: War in the North and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim also square off, and there's an update on the latest news including the $50 price tag for Resident Evil on the 3DS. Wrap it all up with Finishing Moves and it's another epic Weekend Confirmed in the books.

As a New Yorker I can say that they were pretty accuratel with their depiction of New York. Manhattan was impressive but seeing as how I was from Brooklyn it wowed me to no end how close they were with the Brooklyn facsimile. I recognized so many areas when I was traveling through Brooklyn.

My problems with the game started to pile up when I slowly realized that I just wasn't having any fun from a gameplay perspective. It is wonderful to be able to ride your horse along a ridge overlooking the badlands and watch the sun set, but when that is the highlight of the game experience, I think there is a problem. I just didn't find any of the core gameplay mechanics enjoyable.
I also didn't enjoy the story. I understand that it is in some ways a very subtle, complex and mature narrative, but I just found it conceptually flawed and in-effective. The idea of following a man (who by all accounts has been a total scumbag for most of his life) as he tries to redeem his life of crime and violence.... by killing hundreds of people through a series of fetch quests? Doesn't work for me. There are some truly great moments between characters, but by the end of the game I just didn't care about any of them anymore. There was too much of a disconnect between what was happening in the story and what was happening during gameplay.
I think that GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas got around this by being silly. They were so absurdly over-the-top that you could have a cheesy mafia story filled with high speed motorcycle chases and city-wide shootouts. There was an inerrant tongue-in-cheek humor behind the entire setup in those games. There were still moments of real drama, but the entire package just felt more cohesive and in-sync with itself to me.
I actually think San Andreas was on the verge of falling apart. I think it took itself way too seriously for long chunks of time. Luckily the game became more over-the-top in nature as it went on, which ultimately saved it for me.
I just don't think Rockstar has quite figured out how to take a more mature approach to storytelling and fit it into a fun gameplay experience. They can do both separately very well, I just don't think they've managed to combine them quite right yet.
