Saints Row: The Third PC version 'not a port'

"As many of our PC fans are probably aware, the Saints Row 2 port on PC could've been a lot better," Volition has said, going on to detail why Saints Row: The Third should be different. The open-world gang warfare training tool boasts PC-exclusive features include video recording, DirectX 11 support, and more.

"Saints Row: The Third on PC is not a port, and it's our goal here at Volition to prove that to our PC fans," the developer proclaimed in a blog post. While the PC version of SR2 was handled by CD Projekt's Porting House, for 3 it's being developed in-house at Volition, "so that the PC version will be at the same level of playability as the console versions."

"Highlights include AMD Eyefinity support, DX9, DX10, and DX11 support, Crossfire enabled, SLI enabled, advanced depth of field, reflections, and ambient occlusion quality, and, of course, God Rays."

The Steam edition (the retail, and most digital, versions use Steamworks) will offer video recording through the 'Saints Video Record Mode,' letting you share your videos online with your chums. If you're going to be showing off to the world, though, you might want something fancy to wear.

Team Fortress 2 hats are a standard bonus for games on Steam, but Saints Row flips it around: post-launch, you'll get to wear free "oversized bobblehead masks" of TF2 characters as your rampage around Steelport. Other "exclusive customization options" are teased too.

Saints Row: The Third is coming to PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on November 15, published by THQ. You can start playing with the character creator now through the Initiation Station, which opened to all and sundry yesterday, after a brief invite-only period.

All you have to do, THQ, is give out one or two copies to trusted PC reviewers, under whatever NDAs are needed, so they can come back to thumbs up or thumbs down the PC port.

It sounds like THQ has nothing to fear doing this (Beyond early release/review breakage) but I would not be surprised if there are a large # (in the 10,000s if not more) of PC games at the brink of pre-ordering simply due to lack of affirmation on the PC version.

I'm going to take a bullet for you holdouts and keep my pre-order. They seem serious about the PC version not being shit this time, so I'm going to trust these crazy motherfuckers.

I'll let you know if it sucks ass.

Red Faction Armageddon was solid on the PC, so you're probably safe.

This has become a often repeated promise from developers, in a form or another. Too bad that it's proven to be more or less a lie at least as often as the truth. :)

I take it on a developer to developer basis. Volition seems to do pretty good with their PC games aside from the NASTY FOV in RF:A that made me want to throw up (found a fix though). But they do have active employees in their forums that respond and do their best to get issues resolved.

For what it's worth, the SR2 PC port was outsourced. SR3 isn't, apparently, and Volition's in-house PC work is generally solid.

Once I was able to get SR2 to run, I had fun, took me a damn long time though....

I managed to get it to run for about 6 months, then it stopped and I could never revive it.
That 6 months was glorious though. Even if SR3 PC was a port, I'd still buy it.

The game was incredibly hard to get running on the PC. And when it did, it ran like excrement. Massive streaming issues. Huge pop-in. Driving was almost impossible.

And yet, it's one of the most fun games i've ever played. The game outshines the technical problems so much that it's so not funny it becomes even funnier. If SR2 didn't have the technical problems...

Very much looking forward to SR3. I do hope they didn't go too far overboard with the sillyness, the sarcastic interpretation of a serious plot in the SR2 story missions was pretty good imho - As Yahtzee put it, the game is made even more hilarious *because* the main story pretended to be serious, and it knew it pretended to be.

I bought it off steam earlier this year and played it through 100%. There where a few weird issues but no more than GTA IV.

I'd say it was about 2007 for most action titles. Bioshock and UT3 were the two first phoned-in multiplatform PC ports that I played. That coincides with the "PC gaming is in disarray" scare from CliffyB and Todd Hollenshead.

I wonder what Ken Levine thinks about Irrational being one of the "shoddy PC port" vanguards. I'd like to see him publicly commit to higher quality, as Volition have done here.

The whole industry in general needs a new perspective on PC development.

We have to some how stop this crap the majority shit out on us that is basically is unfinished or broken software.

Lets hope certain companies can spear head the attack and convince others that they will win as a company in the end if they put the effort in their PC versions.

Well in the next few weeks there are a lot of PC ports coming out we will see how they are.
