EA's second fiscal quarter performance was hit with highs and lows. While the company reported a net loss of $340 million for the period ending September 30, 2011, EA did announce that it had shipped "nearly" eight million units of FIFA 12, which makes up half of the game's 16 million ship-to-date lifetime. Sales for the franchise has jumped 25 percent, year-over-year, EA reports.
Net revenue for the company was up to $715 million; however, EA's bottom line did not improve versus the same period last year where it reported a net loss of $201 million. In Q2 2011, EA's operating costs for research and development and marketing and sales jumped versus last year. Combined costs in 2010 were reported at $252 million, whereas 2011 was tagged at $374 million.
The exclusive Madden franchise was another strong performer for EA during the reported period, with Madden NFL 12 shipping more than three million units. 2010's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 continued to track strongly for the publishing giant, reaching 11 million units shipped in its lifetime, according to its financial report.
EA's net digital revenue, which accounts for add-ons and its online pass initiative, jumped to $234 million, an increase of more than 40 percent over last year.
EA's third fiscal quarter will be one to watch, as it will detail Battlefield 3's commercial reception and an early indication of how BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic fares with gamers around the globe.
