The Secret World tops 500K beta registrations

Funcom has announced that its upcoming MMORPG The Secret World has gained half a million beta registrations so far. The game is set to launch in April.

The MMORPG market is hard to break into, but users seem to be expressing interest in the supernatural conspiracy motif of The Secret World. Funcom announced today that over 500,000 users have registered for the beta test, which has been running since late August.

Funcom says that most people have joined one of the three secret societies: the Illuminati, the Dragon, or the Templars, making for some early class conflict -- though Funcom didn't mention which faction has gained the most support. The full game isn't due until April 2012, so there's still time to sign up.

"We are thrilled to see the amount of interest 'The Secret World' is generating among gamers and the press, and exceeding half a million beta registrations six months before release is definitely something we are proud of," Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas said in the press release. "The gamer interest in 'The Secret World' and the community size for the game is even greater than we experienced with 'Age of Conan' at the same stage of development. We expect the community size to keep on expanding at an ever faster pace in the coming months as we approach Open Beta and launch."

      Never. Fucking. Again.

The new engine is nice, but there is no way in hell I'll play this at launch after AoC. You'd be a fool to buy this without waiting 6 months or so.

Learned my lesson with Funcom. I'll wait until a month or so after launch to look at it.

I've never beta tested a game. Slave labor isn't my thing, I guess.

I just love how they act like Age of Conan should be their flagship title instead of AO. In true Funcom form the first phase of their pre beta was delayed and bugged, just get to the beta already.

I have a bad feeling about this game.

It has no...hook. I mean, the name tells you nothing, the screenshots look generic - it's just kinda of there. Even if the story is solid, I just don't think it's going to pull players from TOR and WOW.

I'd like to be wrong since it would be cool for Funcom to catch a break and actually release something that doesn't need to be redesigned a few months after launch.

I like its premise. I like the secret mythology, conspiracy stuff. The skill system is intriguing, the modern setting is quite nice. Guild Wars 2 is at the top of my MMO anticipation pile right now, with ToR and this game equally in 2nd place.

Funcom needs to finish The Longest Journey's story arc. :( Why do they insist on continuing to make these shitty MMOs?
