PlayStation 3DTV available on November 13, SimulView games detailed

The PlayStation 3DTV is coming in November. What games take advantage of its unique SimulView feature? Also, Sony confirms that you'll be able to play Xbox 360 and PC games on the monitor.

Ever since its announcement at E3, some gamers have been eagerly awaiting the PlayStation 3DTV. The 24" display includes MotorStorm Apocalypse (and Resistance 3 if you pre-ordered), one pair of 3D glasses, and an HDMI cable. Now, it finally has a date: November 13th.

Perhaps the biggest selling point of the display is its unique "SimulView" feature, which allows two players to get a full-screen image at the same time.

According to Sony, "the 3D Display is the only display on the market that supports the SimulView two-player gaming feature." Of course, to use the SimulView feature, you'll need two pairs of glasses. An extra pair of glasses can be purchased separately for $69.99.

While the feature is novel, not many games actually support the feature. At launch, you'll be able to play MotorStorm Apocalypse, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 3, and Super Stardust HD in SimulView. (No Resistance 3? Wipeout HD?) "We’ll have more titles to share soon," the blog notes, adding, "we are continuing to evaluate all games that would be candidates for SimulView and working individually with each respective development team to determine if enabling SimulView makes sense."

Thankfully, there's at least a bit of 3D content to play, for those of you upset by SimulView's limited selection. According to the PlayStation.Blog, there are over 40 3D games to play on the PS3 right now. And there's also 3D movie content, via Blu-ray 3D and download via the PlayStation Store.

Finally, you'll be able to connect your Xbox 360 and PC to the system, and play 3D games on there as well. (Halo Anniversary, anyone?) There is one caveat: "The only requirement is that the output from the PC needs to be HDMI standard format."

I have to admit, that is a pretty cool technology. I hate split screen. I think LOTR: War in the North is a killer app for that functionality since I believe it only offers split screen for couch coop.

Nothing new about this tech. There's is no tech actually, you just need modified polarized glasses. Take two pairs of regular cheap polarized glasses. Swap out the lenses so that one set uses all the left lenses, the other set uses all the right lenses. Now you can run split screen in 3d mode and both players will see their own screen. The only thing is, it will stretch the split screen to full screen so it will be a little stretched, this is where Sony is probably tweaking games to make them output two full screens instead of two split screens.

Sony TV uses shutter glasses so pretty much the same trick except they sync their shutter glasses with only one view per player.

You can see there's a little bit of bleeding from another players view using polarized glasses so by going with shutter glasses sony eliminated that problem.

I can't wait for the next gen when we can have 3D games running at 1080p instead of half whatever resolution the game runs at. It's especially awful with 720p games being halved.
