Sony Computer Entertainment America boss Jack Tretton has announced the PlayStation Vita will arrive in North America on February 22, 2012. The announcement was made at Web 2.0 Summit... for some reason, and later confirmed via press release.

As previously revealed, the new handheld will arrive in two flavors: a 3G/Wi-Fi-enabled package for $299.99 in the U.S. and a Wi-Fi-only model for $249.99 in the U.S. and Canada. Europe will receive both systems on the same date in February. The release date also includes Africa, the Middle East, and Australasia.

The PlayStation Vita has a multitude of software on the way, including new games in the Uncharted, Resistance, and Call of Duty franchises.

The announcement also puts a date on some titles listed as launch software, such as Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. We're hopeful more release dates will be revealed now that the hardware has been dated.

They would have had mine, the first I would be willing to shell out for a portal system, if they would have put an HDMI out on the retail units.

Any idea on how the 3g coverage plans are going to work?

While tempting, I just don't see the need for a mobile gaming device anymore with the advent of iPhone/iPad/Android gaming platforms. Even my kid is playing more with the iPad on trips than the 3DS.

tbh, phone games suck. they're great if you only have your phone and you have 5-10 minutes to kill and even then maybe around half of them are adaptations of game ideas that just dont work on the platform or controls (all virtual gamepads are objectively terrible).

this beast is going to actually be a gaming machine that has both casual and hardcore games on it. play a shooter online on a mobile device with dual analogs and trigger, not shitty first person touch screen controls and then have some asshole call and interrupt while you're trying to frag some fuckface because you're playing a game on a phone not a mobile console.

yes it'll be that, but like the iPad I won't have it with me unless I have a bag/explicitly decide to bring it, and unlike the iPad it has poor battery life. If I were commuting on the bus every day or something then yeah I could make it part of my regular schedule but otherwise? I just stopped bringing my DS with me unless it was like a plane ride or something. There're plenty of DS ports on iOS that can sustain me well enough to not need a separate device with poor battery life and expensive games. Pay $30-40 for Scribblenauts and Chinatown Wars on DS or wait until they're on iOS for $5-10... hm... tough choice...

the DS version didn't have much better controls. In any case, you're focusing on one particular title, it just serves as an example of the price differential. While there will be games like GTA you don't want to play on a touchscreen there will be plenty others that are fine and similarly cheaper (Civ Rev for example). And for those that aren't I will live with not playing them rather than shelling out $250 for yet another portable device with a weak battery and massively more expensive software.

yeah you're right, the DS version didn't really control that well either. i think because it tried to get you to do too much on the touch screen if i recall.

vita will have dual analog for these types of games to get the best controls required for these kinds of games but not only that it will have touch screen controls for those who want it. i just hope that not too many of the hardcore games make you leave your hand positions on the analogs to do swipes and bullshit. the uncharted demo of how you could use any control method that you want at any given time was the best example and i hope that's a benchmark for how it works. kind of why i'm doing the wait and see approach.

when it all comes down to it, i am sick of cellphone games. i need something with more depth that i don't get bored of after an hour or 2. any games that look worth playing i find out have virtual gamepads on screen or are so thick with micro-transactions that it saps the fun right out.

I do think this, but some of my favourite genre's FPS and RTS just dont cut the mustard with iOS games.

Hopefully if they have there shit together and its not £500 then will probably be a purchase!.

i'm probably going to check this out cautiously. see what you fags have to say at launch and see if there are games worth buying on the thing.

but you know, if EA comes out and says, hey you guys have dual analogs on your game device, we can go back to doing portable NHL ports, it's over. the money won't be able to fly out of my bank account any faster.

It did miss the holiday window, but I'm guessing maybe they're waiting for there to be software available. Maybe they've learned from the 3DS and want to have a handful of high profile releases ready when the unit goes live.
