Firefall--a game you may have seen us write about recently--has finally had its fifth battleframe revealed.

In a new trailer released today, Red 5 Studios has uncovered the secrets behind the 'Dreadnaught,' an extension of the 'assault' class with a focuses on heavy weaponry and damage absorption.

Players utilizing the new frame will have access to a powerful machine-gun that boasts an alt-fire energy shield, which we imagine will be useful when battling for dominance against The Chosen and/or other players around the globe.

I am really excited to play this game!

I hope that there is open world PvP along with the instanced PvP matches. It'll make the game that much more exciting to play!

Yes, there is a large open world area for co-op play. You can play with several hundred players at the same time.

I misread this. There isn't any open world pvp. The technology lets us do planetside scale battles....so it's more of a when rather than if.

That forge video is really cool. Thanks for sharing that!

I watched the video posted of the employees playing their match and it kind of deflated the type of battles I'd like to see. I play a lot of quakelive (and have competed in fps games for years) and I'm not looking for a replacement for that type of experience, but rather a complete mmo experience and those "planetside scale battles".

In all honesty, hearing the news about Planetside 2 was majorly enticing to me! However, the look/art and the features that FireFall is delivering (at least from what I can gather from videos) makes me anxious to play. The movement in the game looks really good and I'm interested to see that in a large scale battle as opposed to a 5v5.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the videos you guys have shown so far of the co-op open world play, but when it comes to a first person shooter being melded with a mmo, you almost expect to see the large scale battles.

          Looking forward to what's next!

Thanks for the feedback. :) Maps currently go up to 20v20, etc. We need to release a new video on our Orbital Comm Tower map. The only vid there right now is the 5v5 Sunken Harbor.

We've actually had battles in open world prototypes of 100-110 players. The real trick is making it fun and have everyone feel they are contributing. This is the part we are still solving. Once we can make it fun, that's when we'll make real plans for Open World PvP. I think we're getting closer.

Please do release a new video of that map. =)

Also, yes, I absolutely can understand this. This is where Planetside failed. The large battles were amazing, but they were pointless. It has been a long time since I've played Planetside, but I just remember there not really being a point to what you were accomplishing. In my lightest armor I could take out a heavy no problem, so there was not a need for gear or items (was there even items in Ps?) and I don't remember there being any bonuses or perks.

How you guys have described the dynamic events of mobs taking over a town that prevent you from accessing the special features related to that town is how I would imagine open world pvp battles really being crucial. Also, if I can draw a WoW reference, areas where both factions have quests or rewards like WoW's Hillsbrad (Southshore/Tarren Mill). Not that both factions have the same quests, but just areas where they could easily happen upon each other. Some of my favorite moments of PvP in WoW were ones that just randomly happened as I explored the open world.

I understand that type of open world pvp could lead to some tremendous griefing, but maybe this is why you limit it to very specific areas. I can imagine whole clans wanting to take over the other faction's town to prevent them access to such quests. And, while my brain is rattling things off, it may be important to give bonuses to those fighting back over time. Such as, a buff that would give them 10% more armor as they fought to take back their home base. This would help those who really aren't as skilled in the fps department. Of course, I am not sure how this game plays, but like Team Fortress 2, I can imagine one really good team being able to shut down the other team with ease.

However, if you just incorporated those large scale open world pvp battles like Planetside where you had specific bases to attack/defend, then I would be just as satisfied.

By the way, I would not normally rattle off my thoughts like this, but since you kept responding and it made me feel like you were listening or genuinely interested in what I had to say, I wanted to post more. Thanks! =)

People who get into the beta will also get additional invites over time that they can give to friends. Just like Gmail when it was in beta.

The beta is paused right now for the next two weeks, because we are building in more logging tools and automated testing. The last test had stable servers, but matchmaking was only matching about half the people into maps.

Once we get it going again, I'd be happy to give out keys to Shackers.

You determine whether something is newsworthy based on how many of you readers it affects and to what extent.

How many Shackers care about Firefall? It seems like a small, but passionate group care. A lot of these people came from the Firefall forums.
How important is this news in the world of Firefall? Not very, it's just a video about one character class. If it were a major game update, or perhaps an extended feature story... I would say that is newsworthy.

The news about stats coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops probably isn't huge news in the world of Call of Duty, at least not compared to the impending release of Modern Warfare 3. But a ton of Shackers (not including me) play Call of Duty, so this is more important to the readership.

Firefall is a small game that gets a disproportionate amount of coverage. A contrasting example would be the game Natural Selection 2, which also have a small, but loyal following on the Shack. The last bit of news regarding this game was eight months ago, despite there being major developments with the game since then.

There is obvious favoritism here but I think this is valid news. I think if you want to have qualms with something it would be that they don't give equal coverage to all games, but they can't do that because thy don't have enough staff, but how they choose what to cover and why might be out of whack. This is still interesting though.

I'm glad shacknews has decided to give favoritism to this game. I've been anxious to hear more and more. The front page + chatty is how I get 90% of my video game news.

I think the article is absolutely newsworthy and an exciting piece of info. It is a huge part of the game and a cool unveiling. I have seen many games get a full on article treatment with the tiniest bit of info released and sometimes I think that is due to the developers reaching out to the community and making that news accessible to the public through multiple streams.

A good example is the small bits of news that came out for Zelda: Skyward Sword. A full article came out detailing that you can remove the controller picture from the ui. Huge, ground breaking news for the game? Nope. Interesting to those interested in the game? Yup. So, it's all pure bias and I'm glad shacknews posted it!
