Is the 4GB drive on your slim Xbox 360 S model driving you mad? Don't worry. Microsoft is releasing a 320GB hard drive, which should sate all your data needs, later this month.

The hard drive will retail for $129.99 and will include an Xbox Live download code for LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars.

Microsoft previously released a standalone hard drive for the Xbox S console: a 250GB hard drive retailed for the same price as the newly announced bundle. That means you're getting more GBs for the same amount of $$s.

Unfortunately, Microsoft uses proprietary hard drives for its Xbox hardware, meaning you're subject to quite a hefty markup. A 320GB hard drive would otherwise cost about $50.

      $130 for 320GB? I can get 2TB (2048GB) for that price.

Herp Derp, oh no Microsoft makes money.

I don't know what they do to test these drives, but I've yet to have an Xbox drive fail, and I just had a standard Seagate HDD fail in under 2 years in my computer. So I'm guessing there is a good reason to pay a little bit more per GB for an Xbox drive.

          It's a 2.5" drive
It comes in a proprietary easy install housing
It is encrypted or secure in some way
It's got to be assembled, marketed, packed, tested- despite the supplier already selling them the drive.
It contains the license to Xbox 1 backwards compatibility.
Console manufacturers make $ on accessories.

So tired of people not knowing this for the 360.

It's the same reason people constantly complain about an Apple computer being overpriced. It's not overpriced if people are buying it.

I chose MBP because it was the best laptop out there for my needs - though I felt the warranty was pretty limited considering what I was paying - but arguably they could make more money by targeting a lower price point, or by releasing lite versions, hence the rumours of a cut-down iPhone to take on the low-end market that Android is doing so well in.

Yes, the reason is that they've selected it as a chance to apply a high margin.

I'm not disagreeing with the strategy, just your reasoning for it being more expensive with an anecdotal comment about Seagate drives was a bit strange.

The pricing on the drive has always been set as the difference between the "arcade" model and the "pro" model that had the largest drive. There was a time when that was quite a bit more than the $130 it is now.

Also, if you compared it to higher quality 2.5" self-enclosed USB drives, it was always competitively priced with those type of drives on the PC side. Yea, it is quite a bit higher when you compare it to bare bones OEM 3.5" drives which most everyone herps and derps about when Microsoft announces a larger size one of these.

Major Nelson also said they do a bit more quality control testing on the drive that was selected, so that's why I threw that out there about my most recent drive failure.

Yeah I've just seen the UK pricing and when placed in context, considering the pricing strategy of the console, the drive's casing and physical size its relatively fair.

I have about twenty full disc games installed, a bunch of Arcade and On Demand games, a ton of DLC and about 500+ Rock Band tracks on my hard drive. I still have about 30 gigs left on it.

You get the main console for way cheaper than a PC, are you seriously going to try to compare everything else on it to PC prices? Did you think they weren't going to make it up somewhere?

        October 12, 2011 6:39 AM

Yea, I don't get these posts. I've broken it down in the past. When you compare it to something closer to what it is on the PC side it isn't overpriced at all. Nevermind that PC guys have to drop $500 on a video card every 6 months, or other stupid shit like that.

          October 12, 2011 6:56 AM

I agree with your analysis, but you kind of undermine your own credibility by suggesting people have to upgrade every 6 months - that is a user choice for people who feel they need the very latest, especially if you are talking $500.

Ah yes, the good old hyperbole. In order to play PC games with good settings, you have to spend $500 on a video card twice a year.

Well, there is also the key strategy for "making up" the loss with a % cut on the games you buy and services you use, hence the higher game prices than PC which adds up over the long term. Its not just buying the initial hardware.

But yeah, it is a very good price for the core console.

His point (which is valid), is that for a PC / Laptop and even a PS3, you can just buy a Hard Drive, and put it in.

While I like my 360 as well, the proprietary Hard Drive (and it's ridiculous markup) has always been, and probably always will be, BS.
