Leisure Suit Larry getting HD treatment; new adventures to come

Replay Games has announced that it is working on an HD remake of the original Leisure Suit Larry, as well as some new adventures, with series-creator Al Lowe.

2012 marks the 25th anniversary of the Leisure Suit Larry series, and while the last several offerings in the franchise haven't been very good, it looks like Larry Laffer is poised to return in both a high-definition remake of the original game--Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards--as well as all-new adventures. Developer Replay Games has recently secured the rights to the franchise, and are bringing series-creator Al Lowe back on board.

After Lowe had previously stopped working on the series, a few new games were produced starring Laffer's significantly less-endearing nephew, Larry Lovage. EGM reports that Lowe and Replay Games CEO Paul Trowe are not only excited about the remake, but are are focused on bringing back the sort of raunchy charm and personality from Larry's early days that made the series a success in the first place.

"I'm overjoyed to see Larry released from his digital dungeon after all this time, and be placed in the hands of someone who understands him and wants to see him, brought back to the forefront by people who love him and understand him," Lowe said.

Replay's Trowe, who worked with Sierra-OnLine as a beta tester back during the golden years when titles like King's Quest, Space Quest, and, of course Leisure Suit Larry, were born. He's clearly an enthusiast. "I've been trying to get the Larry rights for 10 years," he said. "I grew up in the Sierra family, starting beta-testing at 12 years old. To work with such amazing talent, like Al and Robertta is one of my life-long passions. These guys were way ahead of their time, and to be a part of this magic makes me really happy."

Trowe and Lowe have high hopes for the HD redux, but seem even more excited creating new, more modern adventures for the lovelorn sad-sack. "As a software salesman, I think [a modern] Larry would feel right at home, and would stay current... at least with pornography," Lowe opined. "I can see Larry going on Match.com. I'd love to see that series of outtakes," he added.

The HD remake of Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards is planned for a number of platforms in 2012, including Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, XBLA, PSN, On-Live, and Steam.

Holy shit, they're remaking Larry 1 (re-remaking?), there's the chance of a real modern Larry game and Al Lowe's on board? And it's not April Fools? That's fantastic.

Next up on RevRaven's wishlist of things he'd never thought he'd get: An HD remake of X-COM: UFO Defense that runs on a tablet.

I'm fucking shocked they got Al Lowe involved. They had no problem butchering the franchise before.

FUCK YES. Al Lowe is the bomb. Fuck Sierra/Vivendi for dumping him and making those shitty games with his IP.
