Some things are just meant to go together. Birds and bees. Peanut butter and chocolate. War and organized sports. That last combination hasn't quite reached critical mass yet, so EA has pulled some players from the National Football League to run battle simulation exercises as part of a new Battlefield 3 web series, with a finale on Spike TV. Airing through this fall, the series will show Drew Brees, Clay Matthews, Larry Fitzgerald, and Jared Allen training for and then running a simulated operation. Yes, seriously.

The full title is, "GTTV Presents Battlefield 3: Operation Gridiron. The four football stars went to a training camp with Special Operations trainers in August, and learned the basic ropes of performing a military operation, culminating in a live simulated scenario to air on October 24 at noon EST, 9 AM PST. Until then, webisodes will be available every Tuesday on the Battlefield Facebook page.

"Taking to the battlefield in these real life war settings was really exciting and eye-opening," said Drew Brees in the press release. "Every day men and women face challenges similar to what we tackled in this show but with potential dire consequences. Filming this show once again reinforced my respect for the soldiers who fight every day for our freedom."
