Metal Gear Solid HD Collection Limited Edition announced

Konami has announced a new limited edition version of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.

26

Just in case the forthcoming HD re-releases of Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker weren't special enough for you, Konami has announced a new limited edition version of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.

Available on both PS3 and Xbox 360, the Limited Edition includes the game, special package art created by Yoji Shinkawa, and a 248 page "The Art of Metal Gear Solid" book.

Unfortunately, no price was set on the limited edition package. The regular edition of the game will be available for $50.

Blah. While the art book is probably pretty neat, I'd rather have all the soundtracks.

I still don't understand why MGS1 is not included. I had the original, and I still have the twin snakes edition, but any MGS collection feels empty without it.

There hasn't been a single PSX to PS3 update in any of these collections because it'd take a lot more work to make it look good. These collections are mostly resolution and framerate bumps as best I can tell (though I won't complain for a second about them)

It makes me wonder if there is some sort of technical limitation preventing them from using assets from the Gamecube version of MGS.

Kojima (and myself, for that matter) doesn't like that version anyway, so I doubt they'd use it even if they could.

They changed a bunch of shit that didn't need changing, for the worse including VA, music and just the overall feel with Kitamura's cutscenes.

But were the character models and level design still more or less the same? They could always reuse the older sound assets.

I don't think the models were the same since the GC was much more powerful and it was developed by a different developer.

I could swear Konami said something about leaving MGS out of the collection because they'd rather address it later (presumably with a more robust remake).

Well, yeah, it was more powerful. What I meant was, does (for instance) Meryl still wear a tank top and baggy pants? Are the GC characters just nicer looking versions of the PSX characters, or did they do any actual redesigns?

Twin Snakes is completely redrawn, more polygons, higher resolution textures, higher resolution framebuffer, it is a completely new game in every way that counts. The original game was a reference for the work, code is different and so are all of the assets.

Voiceovers in Twin Snakes are far superior, and on every level. The original MGS was not recorded professionally (they didn't even use a soundproof room) and the samples were extremely low quality because it was only going on a Playstation disc.

They are better in quality of sound, but worse in quality of acting. Not that MGS was ever a paragon of voice-acting.

We'll just have to disagree on that one. I can't hear the original MGS without loling anymore. Colonel Campbell sounds like he has a permanent nad-crushing wedgie in it, among other giggles.

We went over this last time this came up. He likes Twin Snakes. It was made as he wanted it made. About the only negative comment he ever had about it was, when asked by the press "why didn't MGS take off on systems other than Sony's?" he had remarked that the other versions "didn't play to the strengths of the systems they were on," or some such other non-answer. The real reason that you will probably not see Twin Snakes on another system or in a collection like this is because Nintendo actually has a stake in its IP, so that cockblocks it out of the gate.

A lot of people like to say this, but even if you aren't a fan, MGS3 is easily the easiest of the games. AI in MGS2 walks all over it, gameplay took quite the dive for the collecting stuff and management that was added. I also hated that the framerate was capped at 30, because half the time it could not even maintain that much, but at least that is being fixed here. MGS2 was always 60.

                What's wrong with easy?

MGS2 had a worse Protagonist, a sillier narrative, and was generally just not as fun as MGS3. Also, how hard exactly was it to once in awhile navigate a menu during a game? Especially when the entire idea wasn't "Run and gun, CONSTANT ACTION", but "Stealth, slow and steady"?

If for no other reason than we don't have to deal with animu-face Raiden, MGS3 was better.

Why would you even argue this? I don't understand the mentality "Oh no, they are saying MGS3 is the best game, but it was never on an Xbox so I better argue it!" Is that's what is going on? Because this whole thread was about the fact that Xbox-only players are finally getting to play both Peace Walker and Snake Eater. We weren't arguing, we were just having a nice time talking about how great MGS3 and the MGS games in general were. Or do you just like to segue conversations about how much people love a series of games into your own personal pet peeves?

                  >What's wrong with easy?

Nothing. Nothing at all. Dumber than rocks even on European Extreme mode on the other hand, and I'm going to pipe up and say something.

                  >MGS2 had a worse Protagonist, a sillier narrative, and was generally just not as fun as MGS3.

All three of those are debatable. Especially the last point.

                  >Also, how hard exactly was it to once in awhile navigate a menu during a game? Especially when the entire idea wasn't "Run and gun, CONSTANT ACTION", but "Stealth, slow and steady"?

There's nothing slow at all about going to an out-of-game menu screen to manage inventory, eat food, etc. At the heart of it, that's something that works against a lot of Hideo's simulation-minded gameplay. I can get into the RPG-like aspect of it but it isn't as polished as the established gameplay by a longshot, and its presence harms the other.

                  >If for no other reason than we don't have to deal with animu-face Raiden, MGS3 was better.

Well that face was there when I played the game, not sure how you avoided it. :D

                  >Why would you even argue this?

Because I love the shit out of the series and MGS3 does not age so well. It even had disappointing aspects on my first playthrough.

                  >I don't understand the mentality "Oh no, they are saying MGS3 is the best game, but it was never on an Xbox so I better argue it!" Is that's what is going on?

Na, there are assloads of faults with it that it would have had in its current form even if it had made it to the XBox, I wouldn't even hold out hope that they would have fixed the 30fps problem.

                  >Because this whole thread was about the fact that Xbox-only players are finally getting to play both Peace Walker and Snake Eater.

                  Then address those guys.

                  >We weren't arguing, we were just having a nice time talking about how great MGS3 and the MGS games in general were.

                  Making up for lost time?

                  >Or do you just like to segue conversations about how much people love a series of games into your own personal pet peeves?

Is this game sacrosanct for being your favourite or something? Does your critical eye go out the window just because you enjoy a game? Am I just the retard for pointing out observations in a discussion like we're all adults?

Adults don't feel the need to express how edgy and against the grain they are in a giant thread dedicated to people loving something.

I get you like MGS2, that's great. And that's your opinion. And you could have easily said "Well guys, MGS3 is good and all, but I prefer MGS2, it fits my tastes better and here is why."

But instead you went "Hey guys, MGS3 sucks, and here's why. MGS2 was better, because I say so"

                    See the difference?

Adults don't pretend they have a vajayjay when they have a penis either, so I'm not sure why you're all anti-edgy and against the grain all of a sudden.

You don't get shit about me. I'd be willing to bet I've logged more time on MGS3 than you've spent holding your Dual Shock 3 in toto. Adults don't get their penis all bent out of shape in their manginal panties when someone points out the several flaws in a game that they were too busy stroking themselves over to notice. If I had to guess I'd say you're still smarting from being oblivious that this isn't the first MGS game on an XBox system, particularly with the way you keep whipping it out the factoid as if it's some kind of weapon. It ain't and neither is your tallywhacker so put it away already.

If anybody said "this is better because I say so" it's you. You're definitely the only one taking offence here. You can keep up your frontpager form but I'll be right along pointing out stuff you don't have eyes to see. MGS2 is very flawed, and suffered a lot for a lot of reasons, shitty translation being an obvious one. MGS3 didn't escape that either, in some ways it's even worse there, and the dumbed-down experience was over all too soon. Didn't stop me from replaying both dozens of times. Are you going to get in a tizzy over the notion that I did that holding a Sony control pad now or something?

The only difference I see between us is that I don't have some kind of illusion that opinion means fact by majority. I also didn't come in, tell you MGS3 sucks, and hold my opinion above yours. I gave actual verifiable facts (slower framerate that can't even maintain its target, menus poorly made and break gameplay and flow, artificial intelligence that is easily bested without tactics) and differences between the games. You gave nothing but a subjective opinion ("Raiden sucks") and you're pitching a hissy fit for getting called on it. I don't think my opinion is any better than yours but you're pretending that yours is, appealing to some kind of majority rule (do you have fun with any games afoul of metacritic?), and getting offended that I said anything at all.

                      See the difference?

Man, you seem to have a HUGE obsession with my penis.

Which is cool and all, but I don't think we can be close like that.

And I knew MGS2 was on the Xbox, I never denied this at any point in the thread, nor was it news to me, you must have gotten be confused with someone else. Which seems like it would be hard, what with us all having nametags.

And you're right, I don't know anything about you. I didn't know you're all angsty about gender-roles. I didn't know you were overly-sensitive about people calling you out on you treating your opinions like facts (MGS3 had technical flaws, that is fact. It being a worse game than MGS2 because of those flaws is an opinion). I didn't know you really wanted to touch my dick, though I did have some inklings.

Anyway, your attacks on my gender-identity aside (seriously, what is this, High School?), stop raging man. This isn't about majority rule, it's about people liking MGS3 and that burning your britches because, for whatever reason, you just can't stand that people liked a game you didn't. Or maybe you can't stand people preferring one game over another when you feel the reverse. It's not my fault you don't know how to express your opinions without coming off sounding like an entitled ass.

Going to start calling you Pee Wee, because your logic works just like Pee Wee Herman's.

Someone: MGS3 is the best of the series.
Me: MGS3 has a lot of problems that older games had licked.
You: What the fuck is wrong with you? Why would you even say that MGS3 has any problems?
Me: Because it has these problems that other games in the series had already solved, it was disappointing to have a stepdown in difficulty, framerate, gameplay, etc.
You: That has nothing to do with this thread, how dare you try to taint my taint with your opinion!
Me: But it's not my opinion. I haven't even told you my opinion, these are facts anybody can verify just looking at the game for ten minutes.
You: Well somebody sure is offended that nobody loves their favourite game!

Seriously, if you had said "I know you are but what am I?" it would have held more weight than anything you've brought up, not just about these games, but about this entire conversation. I can only gather you don't want to have a conversation about video games. Why are you here?
