Weekend Confirmed 80 - Battlefield 3 beta, Gears of War 3, Resistance 3
by Garnett Lee, Sep 30, 2011 11:05am PDTWe didn’t need the official beginning of fall to know the season had arrived. Games that promise to challenge for Game of the Year honors are hitting over the next several weeks and Weekend Confirmed will be digging into them in earnest. Garnett returns from his expedition to Japan just in time to catch up with the Gears of War 3 discussion to get things started. A nasty bout of the flu knocked Xav out this week but Jeff holds things down with our special guest James Stevenson of Insomniac Games. Naturally, there’s some Resistance 3 talk, but much more as well including the Battlefield 3 beta, Burnout Crash, and yes, Jeff braves the waters to talk some about Kirby. With the trifecta of EA Sports games out we also look at how the annual cycle could be improved. And of course we’ve got all the latest gaming news as well. We tweaked the format a little for this eightieth show, so please, let us know what you think in the official Shacknews.com comments.

I'm not the biggest fan of open-world games, but the game is directed enough for me that I have never felt lost or overwhelmed by the world around me. The gunplay is sublime, as expected, and the impact each shot has is communicated so well thanks to the animations of the enemies. There was one really magical moment where I nailed a bandit in the head with one of the boomerang-like wingsticks while he came charging at me. I managed to loot his body while he aimlessly stumbled towards me in his last steps, before he hit the ground - so gratifying, and one of those moments that you wouldn't find in any other game and only occurred thanks to the culmination of so many great design concepts.
The character designs and facial animations are all great, and the visual style of places such as Wellspring bring the world together so coherently and present such an authentic sense of history and character, just like I thought Gears 3 and Resistance 3 managed to achieve. I'm loving it so far and can't wait to play some more.

The difference is, AC sold like 5 million copies in 2 months, so a sequel was guaranteed. Rage won't sell well IMO, cause they released it at a terrible time and didn't really build hype for it that well.
Maybe they can elaborate on the world with some DLC areas and whatnot.
