New video game releases of 10/3-10/9

The arrival of Rage and Dark Souls make next week a glorious time for violence, though there'll be Just Dance 3 to provide relaxation when you're sick of bloodshed.

Next week brings one of those rare treats: a new id Software game, in the form of Rage. Lesser titles might flee for shelter, but Dark Souls has none of that and arrives too, never afraid of a little violence. Sometimes, though, you want lay down your arms and Just Dance (3).

Here's our full list of next week's new releases:

PC

Xbox 360

PlayStation 3

Wii

PlayStation 2

PSP

Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo DS

Compared to Dark Souls, playing Just Dance 3 will feel like taking a nap.

Time to see first-hand if Amazon's release day delivery actually works (Dark Souls)

My understanding is that the co op mode is separate challenge levels, not the single player campaign with a friend.

Rage is based on an engine created by John Carmack, the creator of the FPS engine as we know it today.

id always makes the best fps games.

And no, that is not an opinion nor is that debatable.

I always knew I was going to buy this game.. because I love id games... there is nothing quite like and id-made game. But I wasn't crazy excited about it until I saw the game running live at PAX East. From that point on I've pretty much been counting the days till I can have this game. I think Doom3 haters and others are going to be surprised with this one... this is the biggest id release since Quake 3. It's going to be huge and it's going to be awesome! I still can't believe they were running the demo on the 360... it looked so gorgeous.

        -id Game
-gorgeous new Carmack graphics engine with essentially no repeating textures (unless the artists want to repeat them)
-60fps on the consoles (if you are playing it on that)
-id shooting mechanics (which are always excellent)
-RPG elements: crafting devices, somewhat open world with quests and actual story and fleshed out characters
-a driving engine which sounds like it has driving mechanics equal to or beyond most driving games
-huge detailed environments both internal and external
-interesting looking AI (when I saw the game at PAX the 'bad guys' would come at you in intelligent looking ways.. the animation is amazing and they will hang from pipes, jump over railings, duck behind boxes - very cool)
-that boomerang thing... looks like a lot of fun
-I could keep going but I should probably work

Dark Souls intrigues and disappoints me at the same time. On the one hand, I'd love to experience the challenge and hitting monsters with sharp pointy things never gets old. On the other hand, the desaturated gritty green/brown visual style, the awkward looking animations/camera, and the lack of a compelling story does not seem all that appealing. Beyond that, something just seems a bit off about it. For example, how it says "YOU DEFEATED" in big bold letters across your screen after you kill a boss. It's charmingly retarded, but retarded nonetheless. *braces for screaming fanboy impact*

I just changed my shipping for Rage on Amazon from "super saver" to "release day delivery"... my deliver date changed from October 11th to October 4th and they added $.99 to my shipping and handling?!?! Yes please, I WILL buy that for a dollar!
