Zelda: Skyward Sword videos show off romance, swordplay

Nintendo has released three new trailers for the upcoming Zelda: Skyward Sword, showing off Link's romance with Zelda, and the new swordplay enabled by Wii Motion Plus.

When Nintendo said that the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword would be "like a school drama," they weren't kidding. Link must deal with all the challenges of school life, including a bully. Yes, apparently Heroes of Time can get picked on in school too!

To make things even more awkward, the headmaster of Link's school is Zelda's father. And, as evidenced by the "Romance" trailer released by Nintendo today, he and Zelda seem a lot more friendly in this latest adventure.

Although the game has a much more lighthearted start than other Zelda games, Skyward Sword promises to be one of the most important to the franchise canon. The narrative is set very early on in the Zelda timeline, and promises to "lay the foundation for the events that occur in the rest of the series."

Skyward Sword will be available on November 20th. A limited-edition bundle including a gold Wii Motion Plus controller will also be available on the same day.

I'm actually excited about this direction. Firstly, it explores the romance between Link and Zelda, which none of the other games touched on much.

Secondly, I always feel isolated from other characters in Zelda games. Link rarely establishes much of a connection with anyone. He was friends with Saria in Ocarina of Time, but we only knew that because the characters TOLD us that was so; not much evidence existed. When Zelda gets captured in this game--as we know she will--I'm hoping to feel more compelled to save her from more of an emotional attachment standpoint, rather than the tried-and-true standpoint of, she's the princess, she got captured, and the whole point of the game is to rescue her, so I might as well do that.

Well this is supposed to be a prequel to the entire "story" line. I would hope it was truly epic in basically every way.

Oh, and I love the soundtrack so far. Very light, airy, and whimsical for the sky area, which seems appropriate.
