Skyrim celebrity voice actors unveiled

Bethesda has unveiled the "celebrity" voice cast of Skyrim, which includes several actors very familiar to sci-fi fans.

You apparently can't have a Bethesda RPG without a few famous people rounding out the cast of voice actors, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is no exception. Bethesda announced this morning that it'll feature the familiar tones of Michael Hogan, Christopher Plummer, Joan Allen and other people you've seen on the telly, including Wonder Woman herself.

The lengthy list of actors unveiled today includes Claudia Christian, who played Babylon 5's Susan Ivanova, The Exorcist's Max Von Sydow, Joan Allen, Renee Victor, and George Coe. Then there's Vladimir Kulich, Diane Louise Salinger, and Wonder Woman Lynda Carter as an ancient Nord dragonslayer.

Battlestar Galactica star Michael Hogan, who's also voiced characters in Fallout: New Vegas and Mass Effect 2, will lend his voice to Imperial General Tullius. The chap has a rebellion to crush, so we may get some lovely Hogan shouting.

The actor given top billing is Christopher Plummer, who's played everything from Shakespeare-loving Klingon General Chang in Star Trek VI to Charles Muntz in Pixar's Up. He'll be playing Arngeir of the Greybeards, the reclusive monks skilled in the Way of the Voice but who live in silence. Either that vow is broken during Skyrim, or all his talent will go on emoting "Hmm" and "Mm!"

Fear not, though. Having a few celebs and not-quite-so-celebs hasn't consumed the voice budget, as all in all Skryim has over 70 actors to read its 60,000-plus lines of dialogue.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is scheduled for release on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 11. Enterprising fans recently pieced together an impressive list of its skills and perks, if you want more Skyrim now, now.

I could to without celebrity voices. It didn't do much for Oblivion and we were stuck with 10 people voicing 1000 NPCs. Hopefully it won't be the same in Skyrim.

Luckily for you, Skyrim will only have half the amount of NPCs! All NPCs trickle down to something else after all.

        You're grossly exaggerating.

        1) Prissy sounding elvish male voice

        2) "Hero of Kvatch" guy

        3) Guy that sounds like Rip Torn

        4) Woman used for uptight High Elves

        5) Voice of every single female cat or lizard (Patty and/or Selma?)

        6) Ditto every single male cat or lizard.

        7) Patrick Stewart

        8) The new emperor

        I think that's it.

          ARGH, forgot.

          9) Every female Black human.

          10) Every male Black human.

Whatever. You were right. 10 on the nose.

I wonder how much that adds to the cost of making the game, when it really doesn't
add THAT much to the games.

Agreed and if they are overpaying for name actors vs. standard voice actors, it's a poor way to spend money in my opinion.

I disagree completely. The difference in quality between a standard voice actor and someone with real talent is huge, and makes a drastic impact on the overall quality of a game. Especially one that is heavily story or world based.

^ I agree completely. professional voice actors add a lot to whatever they do. Baldur's Gate 2 is a great example of this.

There are some voice actors I would listen to even if they were reading the phonebook. Jen Taylor, for instance.

Except in Oblivion Bethesda blew all of their voice over budget on Patrick Stewert so 98% of the games voice overs were shit.

I mean it was fine, but it could have been done by anybody else and it would not have
made much impact to the players.

generally the amount of work you do on a project is minimal in comparison to what everyone else does too, but you're still in the credits.

I'm not saying it's not, but most voice work is done in a few days, not months or years. I'm basically saying it's a sweet gig if you're talented enough to do it.

Really doubting that. If Beth was confident enough to embed it in all their trailers and advertisements, you know they did plenty of planning and research to come up with that date. It's set in stone....no way it is going to change at all. It's not like the game is being rushed - they started development right after Fallout 3 was released in '08. If they had even the slightest inkling that it might not make the date, they wouldn't have spend millions of dollars putting it in their ad campaigns.
