Nintendo 3DS owners dislike its 3D effects study finds

A recent study found that twenty-eight percent of Nintendo 3DS owners dislike the system's 3D effect, with thirteen percent turning it off all together.

Twenty-eight percent of Nintendo 3DS owners feel the 3D aspect of playing on the system detracts from the game experience according to a recent study. The results, revealed last week at the 3D Gaming Summit, found that conversely, twenty-two percent found that 3D improved games on the handheld. Further evidence of gamers’ dissatisfaction with the 3D effect is reflected by the thirteen percent of the system’s owners who keep the 3D turned off according to the report.

Research firm Interpret LLC surveyed over 1,600 adults in mid-May for the study reports Variety’s Technotainment blog. Their findings did show that general awareness of the Nintendo 3DS has passed 60 percent; however, most of those responding said they prefer 3D on a home gaming console to a portable device. With holiday sales coming up fast we’ll know soon enough if the 3DS can build up some momentum, but there are signs Nintendo may need more than a price cut to get the sales numbers up where it would like to see them.

This reminds me of John Vignocchi in the E3 2010 Bombcast talking about his 3DS demo experience. The Nintendo rep mentioned the 3D intensity slider, and said to adjust it until it felt comfortable. Johnny did adjust it, and then said, "Okay, it's comfortable." The rep looked at it, and said, "It's off."

I never use 3D on my DS. Granted, the only game I've bought so far is DoA:Dimensions. PLEASE, Nintendo, gimme some more games. Please. I'll buy them.

Don't like Ocarina and Star Fox, huh? Well Cave Story 3D comes out soon (another remake), then Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

If you like RPGs there's that "Bravely Default" thing Square Enix announced at TGS.

E3 2012 needs to be huge for Nintendo because not nearly enough good games have been announced yet.

28% don't like the 3D effect, but only 22% leave it off all the time. That's some nice pollin', Lou.

My ten year old wanted the 3DS so bad. We traded in his DSi XL for the 3DS. Two days later and I'm watching him play, he has the 3d turned off. He said he prefers the 2D. He is completely unbiased. Too young to read or care about news sites. I felt like I wasted my money. He really just wanted Ocarina. This continues to show that good games sell, not gimmicks.

I don't use it. Can barely move the 3DS before your view gets fucked up.

Are we really reporting that with that headline when it's less than a third of the polled users overall?

As to the 13% who turn it off altogether, well, that's entirely reasonable given about 11% of people can't see stereoscopic 3D to begin with.

Yeah, why is that the headline?

It should read: "Some 3DS owner's don't like it's 3D feature". And guess what? That's not news. That's true of almost any product, anywhere. I buy tons of stuff that have features that I don't care for. That stuff also has a lot more features that I do like.

That's fine. I just meant that there are entirely reasonable grounds for it being that high even if it worked great most of the time.

Personally I switch mine around a lot depending on the game and where I'm at.

I'm surprised only 13 percent turn it off. I was looking at the Evo 3D and I really liked it... except for the 3D part. Immediately turned it off and thought it was a great phone, just wished they made a version without the 3D and instead of the extra lens and 3D screen, put extra money into the camera CCD or something.

I love it on games that use it well (Star Fox 3D as an example). I've noticed that turning off 3D seems to enable anti-aliasing on some games, so if the 3D effect isn't that great there are times I'll switch it off.

Nintendo is stupid (even though they built in the on/off switch and no games are 3D only).
