Minecraft 'hardcore' mode destroys worlds

Markus "Notch" Persson has teased "Hardcore" mode for Minecraft, which deletes your world upon death. Ouch.

If you want a greater sense of accomplishment out of your Minecraft experience, Markus "Notch" Persson knows just what to do. In a newly teased "Hardcore" mode, dying won't just eliminate you. It will blink your world from existence. Try not to think about the metaphysical implications here.

Persson showed off the option toggle in a tweet, suggesting that the mode is in testing now and will be added in a future update. If you want to feel the sheer terror of losing all of your carefully constructed operations in an instant, you'll finally have the option next week when the 1.9 update hits.

In a follow-up tweet, he teased "Ultra Hardcore Mode," which deletes a player's premium account status upon death. Persson confirmed to Shacknews that this was a joke, but mentioned that, "surprisingly many people were fine with it, though." Minecrafters are gluttons for punishment, apparently.

Methinks Notch is on some super-trolling right now....

This sounds fine to me, "hardcore" usually means large penalties for dying, people don't have to play this mode if they don't want.

And it was the core of another great feature series from Tom Francis, 'The Minecraft Experiment': http://www.pcgamer.com/tag/the-minecraft-experiment/ (that's newest to oldest, so go to the end)

It's outdated now, but it was really fascinating and tense - partly from the core Ironman mode idea, partly from his presentation. I recommend reading it to anyone that has a chunk of free time.

Too good of an idea, Notch will never do it. Maybe it can be done in a mod.

Kind of pointless if people are using F3 to see their coordinates, though. I hope he disables that once it's out of beta.

Well, if you move 100k blocks away, that would be quite a journey nonetheless.

Even 10,000 blocks would be pretty significant, considering you spawn with nothing. Getting back to your old home base would become an objective in itself.

I was thinking some similar to this too! I wish all the "worlds" i'd started secretly shared a master world and there was a chance I could stumble across my other homesteads during exploration. Or maybe populate similar structures using the building vocabulary I had started in the other worlds.

but with coordinates in the game, you could just go back

How about you respawn as another player and you can't leap until you solve whatever problems he has?

DrWaffles, you need to start making a Minecraft clone.
