Battlefield 3 expansions hitting PS3 first

DICE has announced that all Battlefield 3 expansion packs will release a week early on the PlayStation 3.

Apparently Call of Duty isn't the only big-budget shooter franchise with a console exclusivity arrangement anymore. Sony has arranged a deal with DICE to offer Battlefield 3 expansions a week early on the PlayStation 3. The exclusivity deal will start with the Back to Karkand pack, and apply to all subsequent "full-blown" expansion packs on the system.

The revelation came from DICE product manager Tommy Rydling on the PlayStation Blog. The announcement seemed unclear on whether this applies only to its console competition, or if PC players will also wait a week longer than PS3 owners. Shacknews has contacted DICE for more clarification, and a representative plainly stated, "PS3 players will receive exclusive one-week early access to all Battlefield 3 Expansion Packs." So there you have it.

This seems like a similar deal to the Activision/Microsoft deal to offer early access to Call of Duty packs. Since Battlefield is positioning itself as EA's answer to the popular COD franchise, it only makes sense to strike out at Microsoft's biggest competitor. The COD exclusivity period is longer than a week, but it's still a nice win for Sony.

The blog also teases the open beta, which as previously reported will launch on all platforms on September 29. The game is set to release on October 25.

Yea, BF3 is their Ace in the hole. Despite all of the stupid shit they come up with, and everything we fanboy cry about in return... it really doesn't matter.

We're going to buy BF3, because, there's absolutely nothing like it (bugs and all).

Its pretty funny seeing them take what they sensibly said about this sort of things during the PR run for BFBC2 and tossing it aside.

They freely admitted that releasing expansion packs with exclusive maps was a terrible idea in BF2 as it split the community up and left both sides sore. Those who had the maps couldn't find many populated servers to play on, and those without the maps would get booted from the game if the server changed to a map they didnt have. If you are paying for a server, you arent going to be running maps that empty the damned thing out when they come on. So either you run an exclusively vanilla server, or an exclusively map pack specific server.

So now for BF3 they are just doing it again. Ijits.

I agree. The clusterfuck of BFBC2's community fractalization is just going to be repeated with BF3.

        For fuck sakes, EA.

What I'd love to see, which I know will not happen, would be for gamers to step up like the NetFlix people did and bail on them. I did. ;)

They probably already have, but that's just been blamed on 'pirates' then they christen it as 'pc gaming is dying' and they move onto other platforms where they're unsuccessful then drive the whole industry backwards almost a decade.

I thinks this is good. Sony fan boys get something, if only for a week. I mean their preferred platform is sinking fast. So this will help ease that pain.
I mean, aside from the Sony exclusive titles, what have they been getting first? And the PS3 usually has to wait a month or more for the DLC. That in it self is hilarious. So we at the XBOX camp wait for a week, and when COD comes out they wait for a month.

      I dig it...really I do.....

What I want cleared up is that for those who preordered the game and got the first map expansion pack free if us, "PC GAMERS" have to wait a week after PS3 users? If that's the case, EA can go fuck any pre-orders in the future from now on.

I wish we had more details about this. Do they mean that even though people pre-ordered the PC/360 version just for the sake of getting those map packs, they won't have access to the maps for a full week? Or, does this mean that when the map packs are released for purchase, that PS3 owners will be able to buy them a week earlier than everyone else?

So, since the 360 went CoD they figured BF3 should go PS3? I assume that's what it was because Sony says they don't pay for exclusives.

I was so used to hating Activision I had almost forgotten my EA hatred. "FUCK YOU PC gamer!" they say and kick me in the nuts, then they laugh and walk away with my wallet. No FUCK YOU EA. Suck on my cancelled pre-order. It cost 10 bucks too much anyway!
