Counter-Strike: Global Offensive gets Gun Game mode 'Arsenal'

Popular Counter-Strike mod Gun Game is bringing its weapon-switching fun to CS: Global Offensive in a mode named Arsenal, developed with the help of the mod's makers. Plus, new screenshots!

Valve's working with the folks behind popular Counter-Strike mod Gun Game to officially add a similar mode to the downloadable Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, it announced today. On top of that, we have new screenshots for you to gawp at. "We are excited that Valve reached out and is working with us to ensure Arsenal Mode is the best version of Gun Game," the mod's project lead Michael Barr said in today's announcement. The original Gun Game mod starts players with a pistol and rewards them with a new weapon every time they get a frag, going through all the sidearms, then moving onto the shotguns, assaults rifles, and whatnot until only the greatest weapon remains: the knife. In the original, whoever gets through all the guns and stabs a sucker wins the round. If this all sounds familiar but you haven't played CS, Gun Game modes also appear in Call of Duty: Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3, and have been modded into heaps more games. Valve's stab at Gun Game in CS:GO is the 'Arsenal' game type, with eight new maps of its own and the two modes Arsenal: Arms Race and Arsenal: Demolition. Valve hasn't explained quite what these are yet, but one imagines Demolition is CS's standard DE mode with Gun Game levelling, while Arms Race may well be the popular Gun Game team deathmatch. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is slated to launch in early 2012 for download on PC, Mac, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The PS3 edition will support cross-platform play with PC and Mac, as well as keyboard and mouse controls.

Nice I like the gun game modes in Black ops was a little distraction from the killing routine. It was fun to just have arcade style fun. I have all three systems PC,Xbox,PS3 I would love to get it for my PC but my PC is starting to crap out and im kinda broke to buy a new pc at this time...Ive played CS for years since the original MOD days. So I would like the PC version for all modding that can be done wow-mod,zombie, and all the different stuff that was added that made this game so much fun. PS3 and Xbox version wont have those things as they cant modify the game. This is why PC gaming is still superior and I guess ill just have to save and wait till a new pc =(

It'll probably be running on the Portal 2 version of the engine, so it'll perform pretty similarly.

I always felt like gun game was backwards, you should get weaker weapons over time

That's CS for you--get a bit ahead, and being able to afford better weapons puts you more ahead.

DotA is the same. There was an interview a while ago where Valve was talking about how popular CS and DotA were in spite of their difficulty, and I think on some level the inaccessibility is what gives theses games their staying power. Sitting out for a while every time you mess up and not being able to afford that awesome gun every round motivates you to try harder and makes it more satisfying when you succeed.

thats one of the best parts about the game, especially when played competitively. there aren't many team shooters that can have such drastic swings in momentum over the course of a match

pffft - if you can't win with a colt and body armour you should go back to TF2

Surely I'd have to be playing CS in the first place to be in that situation, and if I'm playing CS I probably have more pressing concerns, such as being held at gunpoint and forced to play CS.

having a colt and body armor in early rounds is the definition of "ahead" in CS

if you won the first round and had multiple kills. again, that would be "ahead"

A lot of servers let you play "reverse gungame" which does exactly that. I personally prefer the option of kills getting progressively more difficult as you level up.

This. Reverse gungame is amazing. probably the only game I miss playing, and I've barely touched a PC game or console in about 3 years.

There's a balance between rewarding a player for doing good and punishing a player for doing bad to motive them to do better as well as keeping the game fair so that the underdog can make a comeback. There was a version of Gun Game called Reverse Gun Game I believe that played in the way you mention. Personally I did like that version better.

Huh? Every gungame match I've played started you out with the best weapons and moved you on to weaker ones.

Even in DOD gungame I think it ends on the knife with the shovel penultimate.

Actually gungame is better than that. You start with crappy pistols but switch quickly to some of the easiest weapons to use well, then to more skill-based ones, then the final weapons are the situational ones, ending in melee or something like that. Which I think makes it perfect.

It's pretty well been confirmed but I'm not sure how it's going to work. There are going to be many raging PS3 players if they are using controllers though.

They've got skill based matchmaking and the rest will work itself out (in theory). I'm personally kinda hyped to play CS with the Move, which works pretty well on games that don't do ADS and have a good frame rate.

Yes there will be cross-platform play. Mouse/keyboard is an option IIRC. The game will simply lump everyone into the same matchmaking service, with the expectation being that it all works itself out. So for example someone who's great with a controller might match with people who are so-so with a mouse.

The recent press release says the game will be available for Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, and not the consoles themselves. Sounds to me like a possible digital-only release so... perhaps not?

CS/CSS is my favorite FPS but I never warmed up to gun game. I found de_ maps, jailbreak, VIP, zombie mod, and zombie escape mod to be vastly more fun. I don't see the appeal of gun game.

It tests your overall shooting skill, requiring you to be at least passable with every weapon in the game, which is a fun change from the usual 2 or 3 viable guns in each match.
