Mass Effect movie adaptation detailed

A Legendary Pictures Q&A has spilled a few early details about the upcoming Mass Effect movie.

Mass Effect is getting a film treatment, and a few of the additional details have slipped out. Following Comic-Con, Legendary Pictures held a fan Q&A which has revealed that the movie will, unsurprisingly, feature the male version of Shepard. When asked if the movie will be a trilogy, the production team simply responded: "We are really focused on making this a great movie, so we'll see where it takes us. We have to get the first one right to know whether there will be more."

The Q&A (via Eurogamer) doesn't offer any casting hints, though it did say that Seth Green will not reprise his role as Joker. Legendary is working with BioWare on developing the story, with Dr. Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka are serving as executive producers. According to the Q&A, BioWare will "allow plot / character changes." Maybe Kaidan will actually be interesting this time around?

Legendary has a solid history of co-producing smart sci-fi action films, like the Nolan Batman series, Watchmen, and Inception. It's currently also developing movies adaptations of the Gears of War and Warcraft franchises.

I just did a search on all movies that were based on video games to try and argue this with you and then realized you're actually right. The only one I could even find that I'd consider "OK" was the first Resident Evil movie.

First Mortal Kombat was okay. It hasn't aged well though.

Just because nobody has done a great one doesn't mean it can't happen. The biggest problem is that most gaming IPs haven't been seriously tackled. Just exploited due to their popularity. Prince of Persia was probably the most honest attempt and they didn't really stick to the lore of the game.

Also, the people involved in these adaptations don't know anything about the IP to begin with. That's a huge problem. At least here Bioware is involved.

I saw MK for the first time a few months ago. It was entertaining but I wouldn't consider it "good". I could see perhaps people feeling differently though when it came out considering how old it is.

I thought the first and second RE movies were pretty alright.

Someone posted a fan-made movie for Portal a week or so ago that was pretty badass, but I'm not sure how well it would translate if it were fully adapted. Link posted below for those who haven't seen it.

Yup, this is true. But it has to happen at some point. Somebody somewhere sometime, even if it's through sheer dumb luck, has to make a good videogame based movie. So why not hope it'll be Mass Effect?

Legendary Films keeps my jaded opinion towards Hollywood in check, especially on the sci-fi front. Wish more of the tards in Hollywood would read some decent sci-fi novels before thinking they're qualified to write a script. All in all though, 2012 will have a sweet line-up of scifi films. A lot of adaptations from really nice novels supposed to be coming out. The Forever War being among them.

If I had to guess I'd say something about how Shepard got to be humanity's choice for Spectre, even though that stuff is kind of decided by the player in ME1. Or worse yet they might be aiming to scrap the whole plot of the games and rewrite some alternate story with the same characters, Hollywood seems to like doing that.

On a side note, I still think the Mass Effect universe is really ripe for some movies or series. There's a lot in there that the games haven't explored that would be really cool to see in film/game/tv form. I can't stress enough how awesome it would be to see a movie about the First Contact War between humans and turians.

I'd prefer they keep some of the better ones from ME2 such as Mordin and Legion. Also Miranda seeing as they can just get Yvonne Strahovski and make her wear that tight jumpsuit.

Yeah, I liked Mordin and Legion. Thane was tolerable. Couldn't stand Jack, Grunt, Samara, and most of all, Zaeed.

Outside of that one mission with Zaeed I pretty much left his ass in the basement where he belongs. I could see a character like Jack being handled better her back story was interesting at least but I don't see it being easily handled in a movie(TV show maybe).

It would be nice if the movie turned out to be awesome and spawned a movie/tv franchise. I like the universe Bioware created it's fairly fleshed out and interesting. I hope they can get a quality director after District 9 I'd be happy with someone like Neill Blomkamp. But considering the track record with movies adapted from games i'm not getting my hopes up.

Chances are it will be a mediocre director and a mediocre movie. Not Bioware's fault, it's just the way they treat game IP.

Do they REALLY need to make a movie with real actors? Just use computer animation and voice actors, it's good enough...just look at what they did for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, etc., and that was years ago. Besides, that way we can have the voice actors from the game come in.
