Fire up your inboxes, ladies and gentlemen. Blizzard Entertainment has announced it has begun distributing beta invites for Diablo 3 to select members of its community that opted in for the test.

If you're one of the lucky few to make the cut, Blizzard recommends you log into your Battle.Net account and download the client at some point. We recommend you stop what you're doing and get that done now. The client is available for the PC and Mac.

Those that were not selected to participate in the beta will be able to gain access via unspecified upcoming promotions and giveaways.

Play WoW. This seems like a good way. My friend played WoW, and not a single other Blizz game since WarCraft 2; and he still got an invite for StarCraft 2 before most others did (the opt-in).

yep. I just wish we'd get to test out runes and help fix the AH and fix the public game lobby.

level cap of 13 isn't bad I guess, but crafting is often messed up (you are going to make something for level 11, and when crafted it comes out requiring level 12) and there's lots of little things. I guess all of that will get fixed behind closed doors.

I wonder if they'll roll out any new updates for the client, or if everything will just be back end tweaks that don't require a data download.

The detector doesn't recognize SLI, which might otherwise have been a good way to get in. :(

It's not clear if this beta is ever going to be as open as SC2 eventually was. From what they've said they don't really need that big of a stress test.
