Battlefield 3 video shows off Xbox 360 gameplay

DICE and EA have released the first Battlefield 3 gameplay trailer running on Xbox 360.

Even if modern warfare shooters aren't your cup of tea, it's hard to argue with how pretty Battlefield 3 is. DICE's upcoming shooter looks marvelous on PC, and looks great on PlayStation 3 as well. But, how does it look on Xbox 360? We'll finally find out today, as DICE and EA have released the first gameplay trailer running on Microsoft's machine.

So how does it hold up? If you want to compare the Xbox 360 and PC versions, you can. Last week, EA released a shortened version of the same "Operation Guillotine" trailer, running on PC.

Why does pretty much game do lens flares as if the game world is viewed through camera lens and not your eyes?

Because you are viewing it through a TV things normally viewed by a TV were taped by a camera. It's less about being realistic from the point of view of a person's eyes and more about being realistic from the point of view of a camera.

I read that not having lens flares make people think it's even more fake than with it. Something to that effect.

I think i've heard that one before as well. Movies and games are less about being realistic and more about creating the illusion of realism.

I watched the making of the movie shooter and the military consultant said that in some scenes the gore was less than what would be true in real life, a) for ratings/censorship b) because people just dont believe that its realistic if the image doesn't reflect their perception.

        Because it looks cool.

Because it's near hopeless to portray a scene in a human-realistic fashion because of all the other senses (smell, touch, pressure, heat, humidty) missing. So you go instead for the realistic-if-filmed-with-a-camcorder approach.

My friends and I have asked the very same question. Just the same as why you get motion blur when you turn really fast. Your eyes naturally produce blur if you aren't focusing on something or looking at something and can't keep up. Even if it's a video game on a monitor in a room, if it moves too fast you can't keep up with it. You don't need it to be artificially implemented.

This is what happens when developers have nothing else to improve upon. Consolization has been basically about caking on post-processing and smothering the content.

Lol, the Guillotine teaser was apparently made from the PC version because several parts of that are also in this one, and looking much worse.

AND no disclaimer that it's "actual in-game footage." XD

So what is this then, a gaffe or a dig?

They don't need a disclaimer to convince me that it's in game footage because it doesn't look particularly amazing in this trailer.

£150 Xbox 360 with those visuals or £600-800 Computer with PC visuals.. That extra £450-650 is in no way worth the visuals you get on the PC.. Besides it doesn't look bad on 360 or even that much worse than the PC trailers to be quite honest

I disagree. If this is your main hobby and money is not a problem, then yes, the price difference is worth it. Besides, It's not just about visuals but also high/consistent frames per second, better controls, bigger maps and player limits, etc, on top of everything else you can do with your PC.

The footage in this trailer looks pretty good, especially considering it's running on a 360, but it doesn't have that next-gen wow-factor like the footage/screenshots they've released for the PC version. Textures look kind of flat and the lighting effects aren't nearly as good. Things like that jump out at me and remind me that I'm playing in a videogame, rather than being immersed in some massive highly interactive movie, which imo is what games like this should aspire to be.

Watching the trailer again and comparing it to the PC one, I agree that the textures are flat in areas and obviously you have half the frame rate here. I did however see this running multiplayer at Gamefest yesterday on the Xbox 360. It looks considerably better than this trailer, but is this down to the A.I running aswell as the scripted events? I'm not too sure myself..

I think the control aspect is down to personal preference. I used to play PC games and nothing else for about 5 years until every part of the computer I was using needed upgrading, so I switched to console and to be honest I really don't miss mouse and keyboard as much as I thought I might.. There is a pretty cool gadget coming out soon which comes with a mouse which I might invest in, but as I previously said. I can't warrant paying that much money for visuals like that as nice as they might be, but for hardware that is pretty much ancient to PC users, I'm more than happy with the visuals I've seen so far.

Looks pretty decent on 360. Looks better on ps3. Looks best on pc. If you can't tell the difference then you probably don't know a whole lot about technology.

In the past few months I've finally been starting to get the feeling that I'm ready for a new console in terms of graphics. Up until lately I had the feeling where graphics were 'good enough' on the 360 so it didn't bother me. Some games are actually very pretty, but it seems like more and more I'm starting to feel it's looking dated. It's pretty amazing actually that it's taken this long.. they've squeezed some excellent life out of the consoles this generation. I think I'm just about ready for the 720.

It is when it's being developed at the same time as the PC version. That means they're actively developing for both platforms at the same time, which means they're making design decisions based around the limitations of consoles in order to make it work on both platforms. Once again ending up with the lowest common denominator; That isn't PC focused at all.

If it was PC focused they would make it for the PC then port it to the consoles.
