Weekend Confirmed 78 - Gears of War 3, TGS '11
by Xav de Matos, Sep 16, 2011 12:00pm PDTWeekend Confirmed and the 8-4 Podcast have merged into one during the Tokyo Game Show once again! Garnett Lee and the crew at 8-4, Ltd.--behind such games as Shadow of the Damned--discuss their experience in Japan during TGS 2011. Then, Jeff Cannata and Xav de Matos take over from sunny, southern California and talk about Gears of War 3, the nefarious pricing structure of Crimson Alliance, and a handful of other games before ending it all with a few Twitter questions. The US segment was so quick that the WC Crew didn't even have time for Finishing Moves!

But it's new if you haven't seen it before, and for a lot of console gamers, the new console tech and online integration has allowed a lot of one-time PC centric developers like Bungie, Bethesda, Valve, Irrational Games, Epic, Gearbox, Infinity Ward and the like to showcase their wares to a generation of people who never stepped outside the console space.
It's true that most of the innovation in the western space has been incremental, refinements to the user experience, complementing core game modes with community features and creation tools, and the blending of tropes from different genres into new, hybrid experiences. But that goes back to one of the points I made - Western developers always seem to be learning from each other, building on something that the last game did, whether they made it or the competition.
Japan, by comparison, is still struggling with basic stuff like online lobbies, save systems, UI, camera control. The annoying thing about Japanese games is that they often have great core ideas and mechanics, and those core ideas are refined and honed to near-perfection. But all the stuff AROUND those ideas that make the user experience fun and intuitive feels rough and behind-the-times.
