Weekend Confirmed 78 - Gears of War 3, TGS '11
by Xav de Matos, Sep 16, 2011 12:00pm PDTWeekend Confirmed and the 8-4 Podcast have merged into one during the Tokyo Game Show once again! Garnett Lee and the crew at 8-4, Ltd.--behind such games as Shadow of the Damned--discuss their experience in Japan during TGS 2011. Then, Jeff Cannata and Xav de Matos take over from sunny, southern California and talk about Gears of War 3, the nefarious pricing structure of Crimson Alliance, and a handful of other games before ending it all with a few Twitter questions. The US segment was so quick that the WC Crew didn't even have time for Finishing Moves!

While some gamer rage is asinine (the Devil May Cry 4 going to 360 frenzy) gamers often get belligerent because they want the best for a game/series they are dedicated to. I know some go way too far and approach their complains in a crappy way, but DON'T gamers have a right to say what they want from a product they are wanting to buy $60 for? Even on used sales, where gamers are often demonized, all I can see is that developers and publishers would do better to concentrate on creating products gamers don't want to trade in, instead of whining about a situation that exists in a lot more industries than gaming.
Wouldn't developers and publishers do good to try to listen to gamers more? I don't think this applies in every case, but I would always side with consumers.

Going back to Sonic 4, I'll admit this freely, I downloaded that game the day it was released, and yeah, it has problems (the biggest of which is that calling the game Sonic 4 was grossly misleading, but that's a different rant), and it was very different from what I expected or wanted. I was very put-off, there was a brief sting of buyer's remorse, but then I decided that instead of bemoaning what the game isn't, I accepted it for what it is, and played it with an open mind and actually found it to be (gasp!) fun.
I can still acknowledge that it's a very, very flawed game, so one's mileage will definitely vary, but it's also not nearly as terrible as you've likely been told. The thing is, the Sonic game that the old fans all want is probably never going to happen. If you can't accept that what you want isn't what you're gonna get, then nothing will ever be good enough for you.
I'm sure we all remember being a kid and playing a crap game for hours on end because it's what we had (mine was Battletoads, fuck that game), I feel for the kids of the world who, right now, are stuck playing Ninjabread Man or some shitty Dora the Explorer game, and I have no sympathy for people who push broken games out the door either, to be clear. That being said, Dead Island was broken on release, and we shrugged; Dante got a dumb new haircut, and we lost our shit.
I just feel that we gamers, as a collective group, lack perspective. We're, frankly, unpleasable, especially when if comes to games we profess to love.
