You'll be able to get 3-5 hours of game playtime out of the PlayStation Vita, Sony has revealed with a new system specs sheet. For comparison purposes, the PSP Go has a quoted battery life of 3-6 hours game time. Nintendo's 3DS also has a 3-5 hour quoted battery life.

The spec sheet from Sony Japan (via IGN) also reveals that the snazzy new handheld will have enough battery life for 5 hours of playing video, or about 9 hours of playing audio. The 2200mA lithium ion battery will take 2 hours and 40 minutes to charge, Sony says.

The Vita launches in Japan on December 17, Sony announced this week, but it isn't due in North America and Europe until early next year. The basic Wi-Fi-only model will cost $249.99, while the flashy 3G-enabled version will be $299.99.

You guys are complaining, but considering the Vita's performance and the number of options it has going, that's not bad at all. Besides, who plays for that long before getting to somewhere you can plug it in?

I do ... the majority of my handheld game playing is while traveling - airplane (mostly), train, taxi. Any device I buy has to work from the US to London or it's not worth it.

My Aircanada flights to London (and wherever else) have a multi-regional power plug in the headrest next to the entertainment system, so it's fine for me.

My 9 hour flight to Greece had a projection screen in the front of the cabin, and no plugs. It sucked ass.

You guys are funny. I think the Vita's looking really promising so far and I can't wait to get my hands on one. 3-5 hours of battery is pretty much average for mobile gaming at this point, whether you like it or not. But more importantly, the software lineup is looking pretty strong.

DS was 8-10 i believe, if not longer. That is my standard of measurement, not the iphone.

DS is old gen now. DSi and 3DS were significantly lower.

Vita's 3-5 hour battery life is actually pretty long. For example you could easily finish an entire COD single player campaign in that time

some of the above comments were basically slanted at the "i wouldn't even play it for 3 hours" and that doesn't seem like a battery life comment.. more of a i'm not interested in playing it at all comment.. and I'm just curious why

Not surprising. If your smartphone could push 3DS/Vita style graphics, it'd be dead in a few hours as well.

They probably wanted to keep it affordable for us folks, I'm sure if they crammed a 3500mah battery in there the price would go up $50

the thing is, they'll be making so many of these things that I think could have afforded to make a battery that lasted, lets say, 4-7 hours instead 3-5. However, they are going to sell portable charging packs and such to make up for it.....tack on the hidden cost of the console!

This is pretty much the same as the psp portables so who cares... People will hate to hate but it's the damn tech in batteries that's lacking. I think the lack battery tech is on purpose because the day a battery that can be charged full in minutes and lasts for long long hours who needs gas cars...

This thing is more powerful than any smartphone and has battery life that is just as comparable. Running an intense 3D game on my iPhone like Rage or NOVA the battery will only last for 3-4 hrs.

This and 3DS (and iphone etc etc) show that the processing and display tech is moving faster than the battery tech.

Duracell need to step it up!!! Battery times get no better but the power drain is more and more, at least in terms of what a company considers cost effective.

Nintendo's fault though, no doubt Sony would have stepped it up if they didn't have the safety cushion of the 3DS being 3 hrs.
