Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 8 will included Xbox Live functionality.

Microsoft has confirmed that the upcoming Windows 8 operating system will include built-in functionality for the digital Xbox Live service previously only accessible via the Xbox 360 console and (in part) on Xbox.com. Xbox Live's Larry Hyrb (Major Nelson) confirmed the announcement, which was revealed during the Microsoft's BUILD Windows keynote address. "Bringing Xbox LIVE to Windows 8 is part of our vision to bring you all the entertainment you want, shared with the people you care about, made easy," Hyrb notes on his blog. No other details are available yet. Hyrb explains: "We have much more detail to share about the capabilities of Xbox Live on Windows and look forward to the opportunity to do so in the near future." If you're interested in checking it out, the BUILD keynote can be streamed online, here.

If its just an app then I guess its OK, but if its ingrained in the OS somehow then are they going back towards bloatware again?

All apps are ingrained in the OS though, thanks to the great APIs Win8 has.

Makes sense. Tie in the next operating system with Xbox 720 and future phone's. Be able to use the same apps across all three platforms etc.

How will you recreate a controller experience onto Windows Phone 7, and a touch game to a controller. They need to be separate entities.

that'll be on the developer, of course.

Who thought that was a good idea. Some things can be left alone without the entire earth crashing down around our heads. Xbox live works well enough on it's own it doesn't need a brother on every single Windows based object ex. Windows Phone 7. This is a very bad move.

I can just see them trying to incorporate Games for Windows into Xbox live and that will not end well for the Xbox.

So.... Windows 7 is going to be the new Win XP, that survived many operating systems released after it.

Something like this could be the first real competition for Steam, if they choose to go that route. I hope they don't, simply because MS has no business in this kind of thing anymore IMO, unless they really go the distance and make it an end user oriented experience, instead of an end user oriented scheme.

However, one thing to keep in mind, is integrating a marketplace in the OS for PC games might get them into the same kind of trouble they have had in the past. I dont know, but it will be interesting. TBH I hope this ends up just being some kind of functionality for the next XBOX and has nothing to do with PC games.

As long as you can play XBLA games on Windows, w/o having to get them on your XBox, I'm sold.

All this will end up being is another shit attempt at Microsoft trying to jam a consolized experience down the throats of PC users and PC developers.

You know, if the OS gives you achievements just for doing certain things with the interface, that might actually buy them some good will.

Hopefully they won't require XBox Live Gold to play "XBox Live for Windows 8" games. That was a move that people hated back when some Games for Windows Live games required Gold for online play. Steam doesn't require a yearly fee; neither do Origin games.

I honestly can't stand forcing touch friendly user interfaces on a desktop OS. I am so far not impressed with Windows 8 based on the videos of it in action that I have seen. I am also not a fan of where Ubuntu is going as well with its Unity UI.

This is precisely the kind of cross-platform integration MS has badly needed for years: products as services, baked into every device, and universally synced and accessible.

It will be more popular an idea once people get their hands on it.

I for one welcome our WinZune Live overlords.
