Black Ops sells over 18 million map packs in nine months

Activision has revealed that Call of Duty fever is going strong, with Black Ops selling 18 million map packs since launching nine months ago.

During an analyst call today, Activision revealed that Call of Duty: Black Ops has sold over 23 million units since launching only nine months ago, which is slightly less than its previous statements. In its last investors call on August 3 call, the publisher noted the game had already achieved 25 million units since launching nine months ago. In comparison, during the August 3 call, Activision said Modern Warfare 2 had sold 22 million units. The continued sales growth of the Call of Duty franchise can be attributed to the popularity of the franchise and the growing install base of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as outlined in a slide from Activision's investor presentation.

Call of Duty growth potential based on hardware sales

Activision also revealed that the latest entry in the Call of Duty series has sold over 18 million map packs. Each pack, priced at $15 per release, has brought in roughly 270 million dollars. The 18 million units of DLC sold equal to 7 million more than Modern Warfare 2's premium releases and 9 million more than Treyarch's previous entry in the series, World at War. Call of Duty fever continues this year with this weekend's Call of Duty XP event in Los Angeles, as well as the November release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

$15 for maps that they will play for months isn't cost efficient? It costs $25 to go to the movies for two people and you only get two hours of entertainment out of it. Your argument is stupid. lol.

Those that want it are idiots and have no idea how easy it is to make these map packs. Or they do know how easy it is but don't know how to spend their own money, either way they are very dumb. These packs that come out every 2 months should cost only $5 at the most, or even be free.

I had a dream about one so I banged that out before I got out of bed, it's pretty much the best map ever but I think I can probably squeeze out 4-5 better ones before the day is out. Should be ready to ship a free map pack in the next week or two with 300 maps.

I don't think CoD is lame, but I personally haven't purchased any map packs for MW2 or CoDBLOPS, so there's over $100 of mine they don't have as my vote.

        I haven't bought it!!

the funny thing BLOPS is "on sale" right now on steam and it still cost more than
        buying Red Orchestra 2 pre-order!

now tell me, is that not just bullshit?

Is MW2 multiplayer any good? I see it's still really popular, but the steam forums suggest everyone hacks. How bad is it? Should I just wait patiently for BF3?

MW2 Multiplayer is decent, but if you're playing the Black Ops Multiplayer, it's very similar...

I like the Black Ops Point/Unlock System better though.

I didn't experience much hacking in MW2, but I didn't like the gameplay. The killstreaks are absolutely ridiculous and the balance is awful. BLOPS fixed a number of issues with MW2 and is the better multiplayer game.

Can't blame them for taking money from suckers. I hope they raise the prices to $30 a map pack and rake in even more money. It's not like videogames are a die hard hobby for me like it used to be so it won't affect me much.

Once a game hits critical mass the rules change. DLC becomes easy money. Your game is so popular and you've got so many customers that even if a fraction of them buy whatever DLC you produce it will still result in money hats. It's even easier for multiplayer FPS since gamers really do need to have all the maps to keep playing with everybody else.

That's it! people keep feeding the trash monster, the more you feed it the more he aggressive he becomes.

I don't get why people buy Kotick's shit sandwich in such numbers, COD is a really dumb shooter, like for one play-through and that's it, DLC's?....I guess kids buy them, I don't get it.

I guess people have been playing so much COD that they forgot it's all just Kotick shit lumbers between 2 very old and moldy bread slices.
