A slice of RPG history has been served up on a bargain platter by Good Old Games, whose spree of classic Electronic Arts additions continued today with the original Ultima trilogy. Young'uns tired of being regaled with grand tales of games made before you were even born, you can now try a few classics for yourself.

GOG is offering a bundle of Ultima I: The First Age of Darkness, Ultima II: Revenge of the Enchantress, and Ultima III: Exodus for $5.99. You get a digital cluebook, spellbook, and maps too.

The Ultima series was created by spaceman Richard 'Lord British' Garriott, and went on to live a long and fruitful life with nine main instalments, spin-offs, console ports, and an acclaimed MMO.

More classics from developer Origin Systems were released on GOG last week, in the first two Wing Commander games.

I loved Exodus, and later Quest of the Avatar on the "tendo" They scaled crazy though, had to try and do all I possibly could without leveling at all to get ahead a bit.

As far as I'm concerned... Ultima V is possibly the greatest game of all time.

That's actually one of the reasons it's great! :) They don't make games like that anymore (or very often). It takes a few kicks in the balls to appreciate the end of the journey.

I remember telling Lord British "No, I don't have the box" just to see what happened. He basically says "then pull up a chair, we're going to be here for a while." Then he sort of wanders off, glumly.

Quest of the Avatar still stands as one of my favorite games of all time, for the music, among other things.

Awesome! Ultima III was the first RPG I ever played.. and wow.. what a place to start. From what I've heard it sounds like the entire JRPG genre was heavily influenced and basically created as a result of the Ultima and Wizardry games. I and II are a bit dated... but Ultima III is still very playable I think.

Borrowed IV from a friend for a month, and when he got it back he was like "Fuck you, you ruined all my virtues!" and I was like "what are virtues? Dude, you're level bazillion and look at all the sweet loot I got from towns for you!"

I sort of missed the point.

Ultima III was my first taste of rpg pc gaming. Well actually a game called Temple of Apshai was but it sucked so Ultima III gets the honor of being my first rpg.

I think Apshai ran on qbasic. You could edit the code if you wanted.

I remember waiting like an hour (seemed like it) for that game to load off the C64 tape player. I was over at a friend's house and we went and watched almost an entire episode of something while it loaded. I could be wrong though. that was like 30yrs ago. Wikipedia says '83, so yeah almost.

        Dang I'm getting old.

Gateway to Apshai and Temple of Apshai were loved in my household growing up, because we got it pirated (sorry...) and had no clue what it was about. Everything was a mystery. One of them had great music, too. I was looking for it on Youtube last month and could not find it ;(

Did anyone else sit outside Britain in Brittany Bay and use a pirate ship to blast anything that came by? In IV and V that led to treasure chests for miles. I pretty much bankrolled my entire quests that way.
