Mass Effect 3 is 'brand new beginning' for series, Shepard's last mission

BioWare confirms that although Mass Effect 3 will be Commander Shepard's final mission, it will mark a "brand new beginning" for the series' future.

With the Mass Effect trilogy about to end, fans will undoubtedly be taken aback by confirmation that ME3 will represent the end of Commander Shepard's adventure. BioWare CEO Dr. Ray Muzyka said that Mass Effect 3 will be Shepard's final mission, "even if there are more games in the Mass Effect universe."

In an interview at Gamescom earlier this year, Muzyka told PC Gamer that BioWare has "ambitious plans to continue [the Mass Effect] franchise going forward." "Mass Effect 3 is simultaneously a couple of different things; a thrilling and epic conclusion to the trilogy as we promised our fans we'd provide for Commander Shepard, but it's also a brand new beginning," he said, concluding, "it's an entry point for new fans and it's also a brand new beginning."

Testimony from Dr. Muzyka is enough, but PC Gamer also followed up with Mass Effect producer Michael Gamble, who confirmed the same. "After this, Commander Shepard's story is complete," he stated, before going on to bluntly confirm that Shepard would not appear--presumably as a playable character--in future games made in the Mass Effect universe.

Cool, so then Mass Effect will continue, well its successful why would you not want to continue it as long as it stays good, ME2 was really great I wonder if 3 will be close or better?

      Great news.

I'm skeptical. They originally announced this as a three part story, and to their credit, they are delivering on that. I'm not sure how interested I'll be in some sort of "expanded universe" games set within or around the main narrative. I feel like it will dilute/detract from the story that matters to me.

I don't know, I give it 4 years and EA will produce a Mass Effect sports game that comes out once a year.

The next game has you playing as Commander Wolfe, Shephard's arch-rival from his college LaCrosse days.

This is good news, as long as they don't cave in and turn Mass Effect into a yearly series of bro games. Unfortunately, EA has been making noises about taking it in this direction D:

A Mass Effect mystery that took place entirely on the citadel with a sort of sandbox aspect (near total freedom of where to go when etc) would be awesome. You would be a C-Sec detective of any of several species and characters would react differently base on that + gender choice.

Final mission does not mean "dead", so I think we'll be seeing more of Shepard in future ME titles, we just won't be playing him or her. Of course, if Shepard's meant to die in ME3, there's no way Bioware would tell us that, as it would pretty much kill the momentum of the game for many from the beginning.
