XCOM E3 demo video: 20 minutes of gameplay

We can now all watch the 20-minute XCOM reboot demo build shown off at E3, which reflects "some pretty aggressive design changes" made to capture more of the original feeling.

2K Marin's 20-minute presentation of XCOM shown at E3 in June is now available in handy video format, so we can all enjoy a good look at its reboot of the much-loved X-COM series, and pretend that we're video games press about to write previews.

The demo is commentated by XCOM narrative director Jordan Thomas, who explains in a written introduction that it reflects "some pretty aggressive design changes" 2K Marin has made since unveiling the game in 2010.

"Our first crack at adapting XCOM to a more personal, real-time experience was way too much within our creative 'comfort zone,'" Thomas writes. "It was kind of a run-and-gun affair, without a lot of focus on the command of your squad, or indeed on tactical play itself."

Our Garnett Lee noted, when he saw this demo build at E3, "It's not the turn-based tactical combat game of the old games, but what I saw came a lot closer to getting the XCOM 'vibe.'" Now you can watch for yourself and make up your own mind.

XCOM is slated to launch for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 6, 2012.

Really I thought it was pretty damn cool, made me want to play it, how many FPS play like that?

I digged the style too, I love alien tech shit like this, maybe its the name XCOM that ercks a lot of people.

Agree. The game looks awesome. Really, the only thing wrong with it is the name (at least to people who know what it means).

I'll grant I don't know how far the gameplay was into the game but the big thing I remember about XCOM is the feeling you were always fighting a losing battle. Remember your first mission against a downed spacecraft? There was usually 1 gray in the ship and you were bloody lucky to come out the other side without losing one or two crew members.

Seeing 3 guys take out 30 or more supposedly technologically advanced aliens, while very cinematic and oozing of eyecandy, made it feel like the aliens were the underdog.

I like a lot of what they're showing here visually but the feel of the gameplay leaves me entirely underwhelmed.

Shit I love what I am seeing this is hot, on my list 100%, yeah yeah its not old school XCOM, who cares I want this game.

This is what it takes to stand out good on them for making a cool game that looks fresh, I am impressed.

This doesn't seem so terrible if you conceptualize it as a Mass Effect-esque RPG instead of a strategy game.

I can't help but thing about how much better this game would look if they just had gone with the 50's style grey aliens with flying saucers. It would have been kind of cliche, but I think it would have worked better with the setting if they did it correctly.
Also It would have matched closer to the original X-Com as well.

I agree. Little grey aliens would have been better. Thing that turns me off the most is the combat.

I think they look awesome and actually alien for once. I was kind of disappointed when I saw at some point they went 'fuckit, and theres some guys with guns'.

Me too. If they were going to go with the 1950s, they should have used 1950s aliens.

As I've been saying for months, the gameplay looks awesome. It's a shame that so many people won't end up giving it a chance out of some weird sense of nostalgia.

Quite the opposite for me. I want to play a new xcom game put of nostalgia, however, the gameplqy looks uninteresting. Brothers In Arms with aliens and superpowers.

Yeah I'm kind of glad I could leave my nostalgia at the door and dig this on its own merits.

I also feel pretty confident we'll one day see a proper return to XCOM's roots, and it will be quite awesome.

I'd be fine with it as long as there are many types of aliens.

While this game doesn't look terrible, it just doesn't look like a game that deserves the name it's been given. Personally, I wish they would just give up on the notion of trying to appeal to the fans of the classic X-Com franchise by trying to claim some features are "kinda like" the classic games. It's not, plain and simple. Instead, they should stop trying to please everyone, make this game an original that can stand on it's own and change the title to be more like a spin-off of the X-Com tactical games. As it stands now, this game looks like it should be called "Brothers In Arms: Alien Invasion!"

The guy seems to keep trying to make weak links from this game to the original X-Com games. I might be more sold if they actually tried to some more X-Com like stuff. Haven't seen much so I'm still hoping to see stuff like your men panicking, getting mind controlled.

Other things are inconsistent with X-Com eg. using alien tech before you researched it, agents with "super powers"

Might be a good game but using the X-Com name isn't helping them IMO

      This looks promising.

A splash of Bioshock, a hint of Mass Effect, sprinkled with Fallout 3, with a mild Brothers in Arms aftertaste.
