Counter-Strike: Global Offensive details: PC-PS3 play; Competitive & Casual modes

Valve's Counter-Strike revamp will support cross-platform play between the PC, Mac and PlayStation 3 editions. So PS3 players don't look ruddy fools, they'll be able to play with keyboard and mouse.

Valve mentioned last week that it hoped to have cross-platform multiplayer in its downloadble Counter-Strike revamp Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and, lo and behold, it's now official. Between PC, Mac and PlayStation 3, at least. A whole host of other details have spilled forth too.

CS: GO players on the PlayStation 3 will be able to play with their chums on PC and Mac, Kotaku reports, as with Portal 2. So they have a chance of holding their own against their PC counterparts, the PS3 version will support keyboard and mouse. If you want to play worse than you would with a controller, though, it also has PlayStation Move support. Sadly there's no word on whether the Xbox 360 edition will join the cross-platform party too, but we live in hope.

Kotaku also details CS: GO's both Competitive and Casual modes, where the former's more like classic CS and the latter's intended to ease new players in. In Casual mode, players don't need to pay for weapons or armor, round and bomb timers are longer, and can chat with and spectate players on both teams. Not so in Competitive. There, you'll still need to save up and buy your gear, and communication and spectating are locked down. Of course, you'll still be able to tweak things if you run your own server.

Valve intends to run many servers of its own though, to offer a tightly controlled and consistent experience. Only these servers will be ranked. Player rankings will be used for matchmaking in Competitive mode, while Casual matchmaking will go by your friends list.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is headed to PC, Mac, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network in the first quarter of 2012. It'll initially launch with seven maps, tweaked versions five classic 'de_' bombing maps and two 'cs_' hostage scenarios. A PC beta is slated to begin in October.

Here's the debut trailer:

is it me or do the graphics still look similar to CSS? Not trying to be critical here but jeez I feel spoiled after seeing BF3 and all these other pretty PC games coming out.

On subject tho cross-platform may be fun here and there... a lot more hardcore gamers on the Xbox 360 though.

I'm assuming it's using an updated version of the source engine.

Graphics are definitely not BF3, but the gameplay is really the important part of CS. Plus, it's important for the game to run on as many people's computers as possible for it to be a success to low-income high density populations which use network cafes instead of personal computers for gaming.

That is exactly what I thought looking at it too. But then you look back at what CS:S looks like now and you are like "holy shit, that looks awful."

Basically I have no interest in this game. If it comes with Episode 3 (LOL) then it would be cool I guess, but I will never pay for it.

Playstation Move support? Playing on PC with kb+mouse against someone using PS Move controls, that's like the hugest clash imaginable. Hilarity will ensue.

I always wondered how a fps game would work with a light gun, would people be able to build muscle memory easier, for example: awp twitch shots. imagine also using that light gun with you sitting on a computer desk with a pc monitor, where you can almost aim directly at what you want to shoot at. would it be better than a kb& mouse hmmm

I for one am REALLY looking forward to CS:GO. As a gamer who largely plays on consoles now, i look forward to a real hardcore shooter with no vehicles, regenerating health, kill streaks, death streaks, overpowered perks or other ridiculous things that have creeped into shooters over the years.

For the people comparing CS:GO graphics to BF3 graphics....keep in mind that you are comparing an arcade game to a full game, and (most likely) a $20-$30 game with a $60 game.

The cross-platform play worked with Portal 2 because of what kind of game it is.

If Valve goes along with it for CS:GO, then we'll truly see how bad players are who use a game pad compared to a mouse/keyboard.

You know they are supporting keyboard and mouse on the ps3 right? And no one argues that gamepads are more effective than the keyboard and mouse. console players just don't care

Considering all the longtime hardcore Counter-Strike players on the PC I don't think this will be the best test case for that.

Also it would significantly piss off every CS player. This is the last thing they would do.

If anything the console version will have modified aim assist, theres no way you can completely gimp an entire segment of players just to make others happy

Yeah that would be a game killer if they did that.

Absolutely zero chance in hell of them doing that. This is Counter-Strike dude, I can't think of a worse game to pull that shit with. I'm betting they'll give console players some respectable amount of auto-aim.

I'm expecting them to not give console players any help. They have the option of using a mouse and keyboard if the controller isn't working for them. For a lot of people, the controller will probably be fine.

That's what Microsoft & FASA did with Shadowrun, and you can see how well that game fared.

Didn't a lot of servers for that one Unreal game that let PC and PS3 players play together get filters to block PS3 players?

I would love an capture and hold mode with respawning...but that's just me.

Hell, it'll likely have mod support...maybe I should just mod it in along with a few other things if I get a chance and the time.
