Computer Using Slackers

The Dvorak has written up an interesting article about computer obsessions. The basic premise is that there is a double standard for people who spend all their time playing a game like basketball as opposed to if that same person spent all their time playing a computer game.

Nevertheless, the kid shooting hoops for an extra 2 hours is seen as a hard worker, and the kid who plays computer games for an extra 2 hours is seen as a slacker. He or she is antisocial, too, as if the kid standing at the free-throw line shooting for hours and hours isn't.
Its kind of tough to separate stereotypes from truth. Thanks t0m.

  • That was a really stupid article, physical sport's keep you in shape you're not sitting on you're ass for one thing,I can understand if we are talking about computer studies,software/computer science/hardware..etc learning about computers, but to say we get just as much out of playing q3 for two hrs as we do playing ball is totally moronic.

Does this idiot have any idea how much work is involved in running up and down a court for a few straight minutes? as if q3 is going to help you're cardiovascular system..:)in the past 2 day's I've read at least 3 post were people talk about missing classes, dropping out of school..having no social life at all because of doom/q2..etc. if you're grade point is not up to par you can kiss division 1 ball good by.

don't get me wrong everyone here know's I'm a quake fiend, but if I did'nt get in at least 3 day's at the gym I would be miserable, not to mention a few pound's heavier..:)trying to make a case for US gamers by making comparison's to athlete's is only going to give gaming a worse rep than it allready has, look at fatality/thresh the best at thier game,

now take a good long look at Michael Jordan the best at his game,..#P

  • First off: I am a quake geek as well, so I am not writing this
    out of any jock-bias.

However, you cannot compare basketball and quaking in term
of what is "socially acceptable," at least not yet. Playing an
extra 30mins of basketball is good for you body, it keeps you
in physical shape, which, regardless of what many Americans
seem to think, is essential for healthy living.

Playing an extra 30mins of quake is not healthy. It may or may
not be unhealthy (radiation from screens, little blinking causing
eye problems etc.), but it is certainly not 'good for you'.

  • My 2 cents:

That article had some serious flaws in it. It was trying to say that people who spend(waste) their time on computer games deserve as much credit as those who spend(waste) their time on something else.

One of the points in the article was that people who spend time on their computer instead of doing something more pysical are being more productive, because there are more jobs in the computer industry...but that wasn't the thesis of the article.

There aren't a lot of jobs in games, or rather in playing games, at least not yet.

I also found the article kind of vague and unprofessional.

But I do think it's stupid that people who play games are looked upon as more anti-social than people who do other activities and sports. Although Im not sure that if that is the case.

    *end rant*
