Namco Bandai and CyberConnect2 have announced a new addition to the .hack franchise. Fans were initially disappointed to find out that the new project would not be a new game to the PS2 RPG series, but a 3D CG movie adaptation of the franchise.

However, it appears that the .hack games are being revived in some form. Namco Bandai announced that the Blu-ray release of the movie will be a "hybrid" disc, not unlike the upcoming Tekken Hybrid. In addition to the movie, the Blu-ray disc will include a "small game."

Unfortunately, Namco Bandai didn't offer any other details on what the interactive content included on the Blu-ray will be. Will it be an HD port of one of the previous .hack games? Or, will it be a brand new game?

For now, fans will have to wait to find out more. Until then, here's a trailer for the movie:

The first .hack ova was a real trip, especially for anyone way into mmo's. I never could get into the mangas. But, the IP still has lots of promise.

Finally stopped to watch the trailer. The world art direction is close to Final Fantasy. The character art direction is similar to the ova's but the color palette is a bit muted for my tastes. Trailer doesn't really give much of what the story is.

The OVA that came with the PS2 games was really boring, I thought. However, the original TV series was great. The usual complaint was that it was too philosophical and wordy, but as a gamer and game developer, I found the topic fascinating.
